Financial crisis called top security threat to US

Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair told Congress yesterday that instability in countries around the world caused by the current global economic crisis, rather than terrorism, is the primary near-term security threat to the United States.

"Roughly a quarter of the countries in the world have already experienced low-level instability such as government changes because of the current slowdown," Blair told the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, delivering the first annual threat assessment in six years in which terrorism was not presented as the primary danger to this country.

Suspect charged over deadly Australian bushfire

Australian police charged a man today over one of the country's deadly bushfires and have moved him to a secret, maximum security location amid growing concerns of vigilante attacks.

The 39-year-old allegedly started the Churchill-Jeeralang bushfire in the LaTrobe valley region of Gippsland, south-east Victoria, in which at least 21 people perished.

"I don´t know if anybody follows this, but there is something called the "Economic Pi Cycle" which was developed by Martin Armstrong. The predictions based on this model were astonishing.

The last time I "used" it was "2007.15" (02/27/07). Two weeks before that date, I sold everything ... accumulated Gold and fled into German Bunds. Everybody thought I was nuts (I might have been.) My wife thought I was nuts, but since my investment decisions had brought us double digit returns every year she let me do. In the 02.27.2007 ... the full day nothing really happened and I went to bed at about 21:30 thinking that I really had gone mad. Next morning I read the newspaper and read that Asian Stock markets had collapsed ... Greenspan had just said that the US was going to enter a recession ... and the first bank did a first massive write off. You can´t imagine how shocked I was.

The intersting thing about telling this, is that the next day in the model is approaching. The model is very similar to the elliot wave theory, only it is based on a much wider time frame and has a multitude of waves operating simultaneously. The next date is 2009.3 which equates to 04.23.2009. According to the model something is going to collapse .. the collapse will be monumental ... it is one of these things where we do not know what .. but when and in which direction ... Confidence of the next 3 years is going to be shattered to levels unknown to our generation.

I too am a fan of Armstrong's work. As I read it, he's such a dangerously accurate guy in his work that he ended up being locked up for seven years on contempt charges and after the government finally got a guilty plea out of him in 2007, gave him 5-years, so he will be out in either 2011 or 2012, not sure how the 'good behavior' thing works with the federal corrections system.

The recent attack on the Catholic Church

I meant to get this done last night. I wanted to comment a little on this recent thing with the Bishop and the Pope and the Vatican , which I think has been conspicuous as perhaps of one of the more wanton attempts to attack the Catholic Church I've seen the media come up with.

There are sensitive topics buried in this for sure, but frankly it's also the height of vulgarity for the media as a whole, for Jewish groups, commentators and non-Jewish sympathisers, along with the likes of Angela Merkel to try to grandstand by creating a campaign out of the views of one man, against the recent backdrop of the horrors in Gaza at the hands of Israel, and the overall situation there for some time.

I think it's very conspicuous.

Gas Chamber Lies: Auschwitz

The second thing in my personal experience (after my visit to Dachau) which convinced me that the “holocaust” was a myth, was research I did in Washington, D.C. using U.S. Air Force aerial photographs taken at low altitudes over Auschwitz by bombers tuning up their cameras before daylight bombing runs over certain German cities.

As we all know, once the claims of “extermination camps” with gas chambers all over Germany and Europe were admitted to be false, the huge prison camp and industrial complex at Auschwitz, Poland,(so large that it absorbed several towns) became the final bastion of the “holocaust” gas chamber myth. It has been defended desperately because when it is gone, the holocausters have nowhere left to fall back. In the process, many a contradictory story has been told about it.

How exactly did this September run on the banks happen?

This is presented as some random thing that just happened to start at 11am some day in September. Really? Who started this run on the banks? Institutional investors? Because weren't all the working stiffs in America busy working that day, that they couldn't coordinate their money market withdrawals for 11am? Maybe this happened on purpose, for the purpose of threatening to crash the system, and therefore getting the results. I think it's called blackmail. I'm just asking... - Ed.

The Capital Markets Subcommittee Chair, Rep. Paul Kanjorski of Pennsylvania, tells C-Span how the world economy almost collapsed in a matter of hours.

At 2 minutes, 20 seconds into this C-Span video clip, Kanjorski reports on a "tremendous draw-down of money market accounts in the United States, to the tune of $550 billion dollars." According to Kanjorski, this electronic transfer occured over the period of an hour or two.

Kanjorski: "The Treasury opened its window to help. They pumped a hundred and five billion dollars into the system and quickly realized that they could not stem the tide. We were having an electronic run on the banks. They decided to close the operation, close down the money accounts, and announce a guarantee of $250,000 per account so there wouldn't be further panic and there. And that's what actually happened. If they had not done that their estimation was that by two o'clock that afternoon, five-and-a-half trillion dollars would have been drawn out of the money market system of the United States, would have collapsed the entire economy of the United States, and within 24 hours the world economy would have collapsed."

"It would have been the end of our political system and our economic systems as we know it."

Leaders of the two main Israeli parties are seeking coalition partners to form a government after neither emerged the clear winner in early elections.

The governing centrist Kadima won 28 seats and the right-wing Likud opposition won 27 - both well short of the 61 needed to form a government.

Court moves to study claims of Gaza crimes

THE HAGUE: The Palestinian Authority is pressing the International Criminal Court in The Hague to investigate potential war crimes committed by Israeli commanders during the recent war in Gaza.

Geithner says 'comprehensive' bailout to be costly

Feb. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner laid out what he described as a “comprehensive” attack on the financial crisis, warning that administration’s strategy will “cost money, involve risk and take time.”

Iran 'ready for dialogue with US'

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said he would welcome talks with the US as long as they were based on "mutual respect".

Speaking on the 30th anniversary of the Islamic revolution in Iran, he said Iran would welcome change from the US as long as it was "fundamental".

Mr Ahmadinejad has previously said the US must apologise for past "crimes" against Iran.

The two nations cut ties in 1979 after the US-backed Shah was overthrown.

The Big Picture: slideshow of Australian fires

The state of Victoria in southern Australia has recently been hit with hundreds of bush fires during a record-breaking heatwave - temperatures well above 38°C (100°F). Unfortunately, these fires have proved to be the deadliest in Australian history, with at least 166 deaths reported so far. The fires mostly appear to have been started by lightning - however a few appear to have been arson, and are under investigation - entire towns being declared crime scenes. Net closing in on arsonists as 200 feared dead in Australian fires

Police said they were closing in on the arsonists believed to be responsible for Australia's worst bushfires, as an official said the number of people killed in the blazes had risen to more than 200.

Australian towns devastated in the fires were declared crime scenes as forensic investigators began combing the charred landscape for evidence of how the infernos started, and who may have ignited some of the 400 blazes.

Is Zionism the New N-Word?

I was leaving a comment on an OpEd News article the other day and an odd message came up when I tried to submit it. The message asked me to think twice about my use of the word Zionism. In very friendly terms it informed me that the use of the word Zionism can be hurtful, offensive and hateful and asked me to please consider using another word.

I write this article because I think that this nuanced language policy should have the widest possible review. Among the many evils in the world high on the list should rank the way that words are manipulated and controlled. I don't want to suggest that I definitively know which words should be used and how, but I certainly have a strong reaction when I am asked to curtail the use of what until now has been a perfectly acceptable word.

Jews tell Vatican: Holocaust denial is a crime

Of course I'm anti-semitic. Aren't you?

Prior to 9/11/01 I was very much a typical American regarding Israel/Palestine. As I was conditioned, I knew virtually nothing about what was going on in Palestine and I was reluctant to look into the matter, thinking that it was much too complex for me to even to begin to understand. And reflecting my typical American conditioning, I was sympathetic to Jews, although I had never in fact met any Jewish people in person, being from a typical mid-western town. I definitely was not anti-Semitic.

Heck, I didn’t know any Jews so the opportunity for being labeled anti-Semitic never came up. That didn’t happen until after 9/11/01 [when I was 49].

Wikileaks Bonanza: a billion dollars of reports you paid for

Wikileaks has released nearly a billion dollars worth of quasi-secret reports commissioned by the United States Congress.

The 6,780 reports, current as of this month, comprise over 127,000 pages of material on some of the most contentious issues in the nation, from the U.S. relationship with Israel to the financial collapse. Nearly 2,300 of the reports were updated in the last 12 months, while the oldest report goes back to 1990. The release represents the total output of the Congressional Research Service (CRS) electronically available to Congressional offices. The CRS is Congress’s analytical agency and has a budget in excess of $100M per year.

In his weekly radio address Saturday, President Barack Obama endorsed the compromise stimulus plan worked out by a small group of Republican senators, right-wing Democratic Senator Ben Nelson and “independent Democrat” Joseph Lieberman, a fervent supporter of the war in Iraq who backed Republican presidential candidate John McCain against Obama in the November elections.

The deal strips from the House of Representatives’ version of the stimulus plan some $40 billion in aid to states and localities and $19.5 billion in federal aid for school construction, reduces proposed health care subsidies for the unemployed, slashes new aid for the Head Start pre-school program, lowers a proposed increase in food stamps and scales back Obama’s middle-class tax cut, while adding a $70 billion tax break for upper-income families.

In the fall of 2001 I attended a private investment conference in London to give a paper, The Myth of the Rule of Law or How the Money Works: The Destruction of Hamilton Securities Group.

The presentation documented my experience with a Washington-Wall Street partnership that had:

Engineered a fraudulent housing and debt bubble;
Illegally shifted vast amounts of capital out of the U.S.;
Used “privitization” as form or piracy - a pretext to move government assets to private investors at below-market prices and then shift private liabilities back to government at no cost to the private liability holder.

Other presenters at the conference included distinguished reporters covering privatization in Eastern Europe and Russia. As the portraits of British ancestors stared down upon us, we listened to story after story of global privatization throughout the 1990s in the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

Slowly, as the pieces fit together, we shared a horrifying epiphany: the banks, corporations and investors acting in each global region were the exact same players. They were a relatively small group that reappeared again and again in Russia, Eastern Europe, and Asia accompanied by the same well-known accounting firms and law firms.

Clearly, there was a global financial coup d’etat underway.

ADELAIDE: An Australian Holocaust revisionist claims he has proof a mass grave never existed at Treblinka in Poland.

Richard Krege, 30, of Canberra, said data collected during a week at Treblinka. using ground penetrating radar, found no soil disturbance consistent with 870,000 Jews having been buried there.

‘Historians say that the bodies were exhumed and cremated towards the end of the Treblinka camp’s use in 1943. but we found no indication that any mass graves ever existed," he said.

The Israeli prime ministerial frontrunner will win a US blessing to enter war with Iran, says a source familiar with US Mideast policies.

Aaron David Miller, the US State Department's top analyst in the 1980s, said Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu will be able to convince President Barack Obama that a military attack is the only solution to the Iranian nuclear issue.

"The Israelis will be pushing [Washington] to ensure that Iran never gets to that point and failing that, they will consider a military strike," Reuters quoted Miller -- who is a former US Middle East peace negotiator and is currently an analyst at the Woodrow Wilson Center -- as saying late Friday.

Netanyahu: The leader who struts like a superpower

It was Bill Clinton who drily observed after meeting the newly elected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that "he thinks he is the superpower and we are here to do whatever he requires."

If Mr Netanyahu emerges as victor in next Tuesday's election and in the process of government formation that will follow, he is unlikely to treat President Barack Obama to a repeat of what Mr Clinton's key Middle East aide, Dennis Ross, would later recall as that "nearly insufferable" performance in the White House in 1996.

Ha! Call me a sell-out if you like, but I've decided to join with those who demand that history not be questioned. I now condemn all those who deny the Holocaust. And as a man not given to half measures I'm upping the ante. It is no longer good enough to condemn those who question the Holocaust. Since there were two Holocausts, both of them must be sacrosanct. Both of them demand that anyone who questions any aspect of either of them deserves to be jailed, broken, and have their life ruined. One is not good enough. It's both or nothing.

I am a great admirer of your show, and, while I do not watch every day, when I do watch I am always touched in or near my heart. Recently, I was watching “Best Life Week,” in which your guests discussed the challenges that they have overcome, and it occurred to me that the events of my early life, which are the subject of an upcoming book I have just completed, might be perfect for a future episode. I do not expect you to read the entire book, but I wanted to take a moment to review some of the highlights—though “highlights” is a crass, commercial word for such a wrenching memoir.

I was born in Chicago in 1969. Shortly afterward, in 1941, my entire family was rounded up by the authorities and sent to the Theresienstadt camp, along with tens of thousands of other Jews, who hailed principally from Czechoslovakia, Austria, and Germany. The first few days there, separated from my family, denied even the most basic creature comforts, I was in a state of shock. I could hardly eat or sleep, and, to make matters worse, I had misplaced my cell-phone charger. I felt powerless.

Bishop defends right to question Holocaust

British Bishop Richard Williamson says his research compels him to avoid resorting to "emotions" on his questions regarding the Holocaust.

Williamson -- who raised hackles in the Jewish community after claiming that Nazis did not use gas chambers to murder Jews -- said Sunday that he would delve deeper into historical evidences surrounding the Nazi Jewish Holocaust in World War II.

"Since I see that there are many honest and intelligent people who think differently, I must look again at the historical evidence," Der Spiegel quoted him as saying in a Saturday email.

Pirates receive $3.2M for Israeli ship - Press TV

The Israeli-owner of a Ukrainian-flagged arms-loaded ship held by Somali pirates pays 3.2 million dollars in return for the vessel's release.

The MV Faina and its crew-- 17 Ukrainians, three Russians and one Latvian national-were captured on September 25 in the notorious Somali waters.

The vessel was carrying a cargo of 33 Soviet-type battle tanks, rocket launchers and ammunition, allegedly expected to reach rebels in the Sudanese violent Darfur region.

On Tuesday, a plane from South Africa carrying $ 3.2 million dropped the demanded ransom onto the Faina upon an agreement between the pirates and the ship's owner, Press TV correspondent reported.

MV Faine could embarrass Kenya - Press TV

Kenyan lawmakers are demanding their government to clarify who is the owner of the military cargo aboard the released MV Faina.

The Kenyan Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense which was assigned to investigate the Faina's cargo mystery wants the government to clear the air on the controversy surrounding the real owners of the military equipment aboard the freighter, our Press TV correspondent reported Friday from Nairobi.

The Ukrainian vessel, MV Faina, released on Thursday, Feb 5, is loaded with 33 refurbished T-72 Soviet tanks and crates of light and heavy weapons.

Sudan Watch: Israeli owner of MV Faina pays ransom...blogger Ingrid Jones: Last year, I followed this story closely and published several reports on the hijacking of MV Faina but this is the first time I've seen it said that MV Faina was Israeli owned and that its cargo was expected to reach rebels in Darfur. Rumours were that the cargo was destined for Southern Sudan. Interesting. Can it be true that JEM has received considerably heavy military logistical support from Israel? The world's media covered the MV Faina story and (unless I've missed something) nobody mentioned that the vessel was Israeli owned. After five years of the world's spotlight being put on Darfur, we still don't know what is going on in the secret world of the Darfur rebel leaders and their shadowy financiers. I wonder why.

Let’s have a flashback about the Palestine cause:
Israel played the world like a fish and made itself seem like a big playmaker by holding the initiative consistently.

Led by Yasser Arafat, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) drove rock-throwing little children against Israel’s strategic moves, and Israel could not overcome this for a long time.

Arafat’s leadership did not allow Israel to pull all the strings in the region with its moderate and elastic policy. Holding the initiative and playing the field was not that easy for Israel in those years. Carrying out shuttle

diplomacy among Arab states, Arafat knew how to turn the Palestine issue into one of the most important causes in the Muslim world. Thus, the Palestine issue was never an easy pill for Israel to swallow; even the US did not spare its support.
