Livni sets her deadline for Israel coalition

Setting the stage for that animal Netanyahu to lead Israel. - Ed.

Israel's Prime Minister-designate, Tzipi Livni, has set an ultimatum: either she will have a new government ready by Sunday or she will call for early elections.

Yesterday, Ms Livni said she had spoken with the Israeli President Shimon Peres and informed him of her decision. She still has 10 more days to put together a parliamentary majority but, faced with stiff demands from potential coalition partners, she seems to have opted to forcing their hands. Ms Livni has secured the backing of the left-of-centre Labour party. Her main obstacle remains securing the support of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party.

An early election could prevent Ms Livni from becoming Israel's first female prime minister in more than 30 years. Opinion polls have indicated that the hawkish Likud party would sweep to power if new elections were held.

The Approach of the Anti-Christ

It’s an old story that has been repeated so many times, yet the greater part of humanity still hasn’t learned. But the lesson is a simple one and until we learn it we will carry on repeating the same old mistakes.

For the Illuminati have a history of creating problems, or allowing them to develop to the stage where people demand, “something must be done”! At which point the Illuminati then step forward with an answer. A solution that formerly might have been unacceptable had it not been needed to fix a problem requiring remedy so urgently.

The Rothschilds and their 200 years of political influence

Nat Rothschild, the financier at the centre of allegations that threaten to engulf the shadow Chancellor, George Osborne, is no stranger to laws which forbid politicians from accepting donations from abroad.

Political donations from overseas are also illegal in the US, where John McCain's campaign team is under investigation for allegedly accepting a benefit in kind from two mega-rich British citizens, namely Nat Rothschild and his father, Jacob, the Fourth Baron Rothschild.

Obama chides Biden over remark about a world crisis testing his presidency

RICHMOND, Va. — Senators Barack Obama and Joseph R. Biden Jr. seldom see each other as they campaign for the Democratic ticket. And they talk only occasionally. But on Wednesday, Mr. Obama delivered a long-distance message to his running mate.

“I think Joe sometimes engages in rhetorical flourishes,” Mr. Obama said, gently chiding the vice-presidential nominee as he sought to sweep aside a dustup Mr. Biden touched off when he predicted that a world crisis would test Mr. Obama during his first six months in office.

An interview with Richard C. Cook

A brilliant, honest and brave man. - Ed.

GC: Just a little background: I was reading your articles on the Web, with much interest, getting a lot of information; then, I was pleased to find your favorable comments on something I’d written. I wrote you that, should you find yourself in the D.C. area, give a holler—and, you’re the only guy I ever wrote that to who actually hollered!

RC: (Laughs.)

GC: So … here we are … I want to get into your ideas—your views on the economy … But first, can you tell us a little about yourself? I’ve read some of your first book, CHALLENGER REVEALED, and I think it’s fair to say that you established your reputation as a whistle-blower back in 1987 in front of the Presidential Commission on the space shuttle disaster. You worked for NASA, you were prescient back then, your warnings were ignored or dismissed. I hope that some of us are a little smarter, and that there are more of us who can better heed your warnings now about our free-falling economy. First, Who is Richard Cook?

Richard C. Cook: They did it on purpose

During the Clinton administration, the government required the financial industry to start expanding the frequency of mortgage loans to consumers who might not have qualified in the past.

When George W. Bush was named president by the Supreme Court in December 2000, the stock market had begun to decline with the bursting of the dot.com bubble.

In 2001 the frequency of White House visits by Alan Greenspan increased.

Greenspan endorsed President Bush’s March 2001 tax cuts for the rich. More such cuts took place in May 2003.

Signs of recession had begun to show in early 2001. The stock market crashed after 9/11. The U.S. invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 and Iraq in March 2003.

It's different this time: Housing, deflation & depression

Now that the economy is careening from a systemic financial meltdown into depression, it is easy pundit pickings to "compare and contrast" this depression with the Great Depression of the 30s and with the Stagflation of the 70s.

We've all seen a number of these analyses, and I have yet to find one which illuminates housing's quite different characteristics in the deflationary 30s, the inflationary 70s and the present. Here is my attempt to draw distinctions between those past depressions and the one we are now entering.

Why single out housing? For the simple reason it is the primary reservoir of both psychological and "real" wealth (i.e. assets as measured in constant dollars or purchasing-power parity.)

Confusion reigns: A crisis-driven global rush to dollar liquidity is not deflation

In the crisis stage of a debt deflation, defined by Fisher and Minsky as a reduction in debt financing, credit and money market panic causes banks to stop lending and borrowing from each other, pay off existing loans to shore up their balance sheets, and build reserves against expected future losses. This creates a short term spike in demand for the currency in which the debt is denominated, in the current case dollars. To the uninitiated, this looks like monetary deflation. A strengthening currency and falling interest rates also characterizes monetary deflation. That can in time produce commodity price deflation, so the confusion is understandable. But don't be fooled.

Winter Patriot's One and Only Post about Electoral Reform

It's brilliant and stupid at the same time. It's so practical, it's practically perfect; but it's also ludicrous, and it’s impossible to imagine that it could ever be implemented. Welcome to my one and only post about electoral reform.

Electoral reform is, of course, a chicken-and-egg problem. In order for us -- We The People, remember us? -- to reform the system, we would have to control it. But in order to control it, we would have to reform it.

And it's not only a chicken-and-egg problem, but it's also an impossible one, because we don't have any chickens or any eggs.

But who cares? We're knee-deep in campaign propaganda anyway, so we might as well fantasize about something else for a minute. And as I've promised, this will be my only post on the subject.

'Flying syringe' mosquitos, other ideas get Gates funding

Unbelievable. Consent? Who needs consent?!? Just set loose a swarm of genetically altered bugs on some unsuspecting poor people. It's totally humane. What could possibly go wrong? - Ed.

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded 100,000 dollars each on Wednesday to scientists in 22 countries including funding for a Japanese proposal to turn mosquitos into "flying syringes" delivering vaccines.

The charitable foundation created by the founder of software giant Microsoft said in a statement that the grants were designed to "explore bold and largely unproven ways to improve global health."

The grants were awarded for research into preventing or curing infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis and limiting the emergence of drug resistance.

They are the first round of funding for the Gates Foundation's "Grand Challenges Explorations," a five-year 100-million-dollar initiative to "promote innovative ideas in global health."

LETS: Local Exchange Trading Systems - info

Once you've grasped the LETS philosophy, then trading in LETS points becomes an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

My LETS philosophy is, "Don't think of LETS points as dollars. Think of them as favours".

LETS, or Local Exchange Trading Systems, are local community trading groups where members exchange their goods and services with each other in a spirit of harmony and a genuine desire to help each other.

The LETS group's function is to act as a bookkeeper for the members' transactions, keeping record of these 'favours' (also called 'beans', 'auras', 'shells', 'talents', thank yous', etc.) and putting the members' accounts into debit or credit accordingly. An account which is in credit identifies a member who has given more favours than he's received. An account which is in debit identifies a member who has received more favours than he's given. As there is no interest paid to accounts in credit, and no interest charged to accounts in debit, neither situation is a problem, and both are necessary in order to make transactions happen.

Islamic banking escapes fallout

It's the usury, stupid. - Ed.

KUALA LUMPUR - ISLAMIC banking has largely escaped the fallout from the global financial crisis, thanks to rules that forbid the sort of risky business that is felling mainstream institutions.

But experts say that because of its heavy reliance on property investments and private equity, the booming 1.0 trillion dollar global industry could be hit if the turmoil worsens and real assets start to crumble.

'In the current financial turmoil, it is interesting to note that Islamic financing may have prevented a majority of the mess created by the conventional banking and financial institutions,' Kuwait Finance House said in a report.

Preparing the cover story for the theft of the election

Two weeks to go and the machine is starting to prepare the narrative for how it is possible that John McCain won the 2008 Presidential election. With every poll showing an Obama lead of anywhere from 10-14 points for the past few weeks, suddenly today the Associated Press announced a new poll that shows the race in a dead heat. Nonsense. With the backdrop of the Kennedy-Palast reporting on how the GOP has already started the systematic theft of the election this poll today is just the coverage they need to pretend that the results of a McCain victory will be legitimate. If McCain does indeed go on to steal the election, no doubt his supporters will point to this bogus poll to refute the other polls.

The reality: It may actually be true.

Israel gets real on Iran

Washington On the eve of his departure from political life, outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert delivered a stinging parting shot – putting under question not only the wisdom of holding on to Palestinian land, but also the feasibility of an Israeli military strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

“We have to make a decision, one that goes against all our instincts, against our collective memory”, he told the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth. Recognizing that no other Israeli leader ever had uttered these words publicly, Olmert went on to declare that “Israel must withdraw from almost all, if not all” of the West Bank to achieve peace.

Israeli revealed as owner of South Sudan bound weapons ship (MV Faina)

Registration documents gathered by BBC included the confirmation that the ship hijacked by Somalia pirates belonged to a Jewish investor residing in the self proclaimed state of Israel, and not a Ukrainian ship.

The crisis surrounding the destination of its cargo were further resolved when transportation codes with "GOSS" (an acronym for Government of South Sudan) were found amongst the documentations to solve the deepening mystery.

We are giving them our real money to make up for losses of pseudo-money that never really existed

In response to an essay about the government bailouts, I received the following comment:

"I posed a question to a few ‘experts’ asking where all this lost money had gone, or if it ever existed, but got no reply.

A couple of days later I heard the same question asked to a BBC radio business program. They went across the road from the BBC studio, to the London school of Economics to ask 2 of their senior lecturers this question.

Their answer? No, the lost money never really existed!

So now we are giving them OUR money to make up for the losses that only really existed as 1s and 0s in their computers. Unbelievable."

I was just listening to Ron Paul on the latest Bail-Out of banks. He disapproved of the Bail-Out because he claims that it will destroy the financial system as we know it by destroying the dollar's value and creating hyper-inflation.

Ron Paul said "you can not just create trillions of dollars out of thin air without creating inflation". Paul's conclusions are based upon the idea of demand pull inflation. This means a situation where excess amounts of money are chasing a static or near static amount of goods and services.

Mutant seeds for Mesopotamia

One would think that Iraqi farmers, now prospering under "freedom" and "democracy," would be able to plant the seeds of their choosing, but that choice, under little-known Order 81, would be illegal.

But first, it is important to set the context. Most people have never heard of the infamous "100 Orders," but they help explain why the majority of Iraqis remain opposed to foreign occupation. The 100 Orders allow multinational corporations to basically privatize an entire nation, and this degree of foreign and private control has not been witnessed since the days of the British East India Company and its extraterritoriality treaties.

Oligarchs, Mandelson and Osborne

It was unwise, to put it mildly, for the shadow Chancellor, George Osborne, to use confidences learnt while holidaying in Corfu as a guest of his old college friend Nat Rothschild to attack a political bruiser as formidable as Peter Mandelson. Mr Rothschild saw the smear campaign as a betrayal of his hospitality and has given Mr Mandelson all the ammunition he needs to bite back.

The Treasury Department has hired two big accounting firms to help keep tabs on the government's financial-industry rescue program, and once again certain basic elements of the deals are shrouded in secrecy.

PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP will provide internal controls for the government's $700 billion bailout fund. Ernst & Young will provide general accounting and consulting. The Treasury Department said the first phase of the three-year contracts will be worth $191,469.27 and $492.006.95, respectively.

That sort of specific detail is lacking in the agreements themselves. The Pricewaterhouse Coopers contract released by the Treasury Department on Tuesday has blacked-out text in the area covering the firm's bid, and also conceals the name of the PricewaterhouseCoopers partner who signed the deal.

Media outlets are preparing for the possibility that their Election Day surveys could be skewed because of overstated support for Barack Obama, largely because of the enthusiasm of his supporters.

While exit polling is a notoriously inexact science—early exit poll results suggested John Kerry would be elected president in 2004—the introduction of several new variables, ranging from the zeal of Obama’s supporters to his racial background to widespread early voting, is causing concerns among those who charged with conducting the surveys and the networks that will be reporting them.

I don’t care who the candidate is. I don’t care what issues to which he seems to gravitate. I don’t care about his record, his leadership qualities, the apparent first-lady-ness of his wife (or her husband), his insider-ness or his outsider-ness, his race, his height, his weight, how well he speaks, how wonderfully he photographs, the nation of his birth, how likely it might be that he’s fun to drink with, or his appreciation for unique uses for a fine cigar.

More importantly though, given two other observations, voting strikes me as an incredible waste of time for anyone who is ultimately interested in two rather vital issues: personal liberty and personal responsibility.

Amschel Rothschild’s declaration that control of the money provides de-facto hegemony is being extended before our eyes. I do not believe the world wide financial crisis was happenstance – it was planned in order to gain control over the world monetary system. My older sister had a typical reaction to a detailed explanation. “Can you imagine what our friends would think of us if we expressed this opinion? They would think we were crazy!”

The brainwashing has been successful. Truth has been so well wrapped in falsehood that many of us who know it are afraid to mention it out loud.

Recession/Depressions: How the GOP 'Soaks' the Poor and Middle Classes

'Depression' is the word used to describe how the working classes get soaked. Austrian-born economist Joseph Schumpeter as quoted in Robert Heilbronner's "The Worldly Philosophers" regaled his Harvard students in the mid-1930s
Chentleman, you are vorried about the depression. You should not be. For capitalism, a depression is a good cold douche. [By which he meant shower.]

Scrooge put it even more bluntly:
"Are there no workhouses? Are there no prisons...then let them die and decrease the surplus population." —Scrooge

There have been fears that the US economy was perched to jump off into a 1930s-style depression. Thanks to Schumpeter, many have said that a recession or a depression may not be such a bad thing. That depends, of course, upon whether or not you have enough reserves to ride out a recession. It has been argued that the international 'banking establishment' manufactures recessions/depressions to give investors a chance to pick up bargain stocks or entire businesses. But --is this a good thing as Schumpeter implied?

The 21st Century American Revolution

This time it’s Noam Chomsky that is doing it. He says that of course the American political elite and their manufacturing and the financial establishments run the government. The political and wealthy elite have always run this country, and this according to what he attributes to James Madison, was always the founders intent. The appearance of cronyism and an exclusive club that runs the country, the “political elite” have always maintained power. The only time a true populist movement took hold in Washington is when Andrew Jackson became president and ushered in Jacksonian democracy, threw out the central bank, and fired his cabinet for not addressing the needs of the people by arguing with him about policy.

Ellen Brown: Solutions Offered

Financial Meltdown: The Greatest Transfer of Wealth in History

On October 15, the Presidential candidates had their last debate before the election. They talked of the baleful state of the economy and the stock market; but omitted from the discussion was what actually caused the credit freeze, and whether the banks should be nationalized as Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson is now proceeding to do. The omission was probably excusable, since the financial landscape has been changing so fast that it is hard to keep up. A year ago, the Dow Jones Industrial Average broke through 14,000 to make a new all-time high. Anyone predicting then that a year later the Dow would drop nearly by half and the Treasury would move to nationalize the banks would have been regarded with amused disbelief. But that is where we are today.1

The Corporatists

Corporatists of left, right and centre show a marked hostility to allegations that the European Union is fundamentally fascist. This is perhaps not surprising since they combine in their belief in supranational government, collective solutions, corporatist economics, State intervention and what Tony Blair often termed the "Third Way" most of the characteristics of fascism.
They must therefore seek to distance themselves from that discredited ideology. This is made easier if they can find an enemy to whom they can ascribe the values of "fascism" they choose nationalists and those they term "the extreme right".

On Ayers, Obama and "Terrorism"

As others have observed, palling around with terrorists has a long and sordid history in America. Just take the six decades I’ve been alive. Venerated Senators and Representatives made common cause with the Ku Klux Klan and their ilk, whose murders were the ultimate backstop for maintaining American apartheid. That system, you may recall, rested on ruthless white rule over the portion of the United States which allegedly lost the Civil War. It reinstituted slavery in a visible but widely ignored form, and for 90 years it destroyed every civil right of African-Americans, enforcing this with terror, including lynchings and other murders.

Norilsk Nickel: A Tale of Unbridled Capitalism, Russian Style

The launch of Russia’s stock markets in the early 90s and the privatization of state assets was one of the best things that happened in the short career of Dmitri Mededov, a Russian attorney.

Opening up Russia’s stock market and changing the economic system included lucrative loans against stock. These loans were designed to benefit the Russian government of President Boris Yeltsin, which could not finance its huge budget deficits by just printing more money – a stopgap measure that would just spark inflation and generate other serious financial problems.

“So we thought of a plan to have commercial banks loan all the money they wanted to the government in exchange for bonds and equities, using oil and gas or mining companies as collateral. For those of you calling Powell's decision based on race, maybe you're the racist

This is a comment among many comments for and against Colin Powell that I read. I feel that this is one comment that should give us something to think about. I guess that if your a racist, you would not like this comment. Racism is what will destroy our Country.

If you don't think there is a different standard for Obama & McCain, read on.........

We really haven't measured the effect of "race" on the race. Think
about this and what it means about how important "race" is, (and shouldn't be):

Obama/Biden vs McCain/Palin, what if things were switched around?

What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the stage,
including a three month old infant and an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter?

What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review?

What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his
graduating class?

Don't be shocked if McCain and Sarah Palin win

Watch this video and see the hatred McCain and Palin have stoked against Obama as a black person and indirectly against all Muslims. This is a shocking report from an October 12 Sarah Palin campaign rally in Ohio.

Several Palin supporters told reporter Casey Kauffman what they really thought about Obama -- in blatantly racist terms, with one man even invoking the infamous N-word against the African-American Illinois senator. Not only did Palin make no attempt to stem the feelings of ill will toward Obama -- as John McCain had done two days earlier in Minnesota -- she actually stoked the hateful feelings by branding him one "who sympathizes with terrorists." The hatred wasn't limited to Obama himself: Kauffman also interviewed an Obama supporter who staged a protest outside the rally who said that he, too, was called the N-word -- even though he's white.

Let It Collapse - from Christopher Ketcham

So the tax-payer hand-out will “save” Wall Street from its own predations. Any reasonable man, of course, would wish the pig-fuckers to fry in their own feces. Let the free market carry out their corpses to the gutter. And mine too, perhaps, for as a magazine writer I depend on the thoughtlessness and blind-mole cupidity of credit-card consumerism – the credit system now imploding – to feed the ad-market that feeds the magazines that pay my bills. Without dumb blondes buying Manohlo Blahniks and metrosexuals fawning over prawns in overpriced restaurants, my paycheck turns to dust.

The Red/Blue/Yellow Lists

If you study world history then you are probably already aware that our once great country has become what our ancestors fought and died to stop. Fascists! From the introduction of Nazi procedures and symbolisms in our government and military, to the foundation of organizations like The DHS which is nothing more than the Stasi with a new name. Look at The Iraq War, Real ID, The NAU/SPP, Use of Torture, Election Fraud, Media Black Outs, Past Assassinations, and so on...... We all know how our government and all of it's covert agencies just love to make lists. I read that the TSA's no fly watch list is now over one million people. So I am sure that the blue list / red list really do exist.

Letter: Andrew Lahde, Lahde Capital Management

Today I write not to gloat. Given the pain that nearly everyone is experiencing, that would be entirely inappropriate. Nor am I writing to make further predictions, as most of my forecasts in previous letters have unfolded or are in the process of unfolding. Instead, I am writing to say goodbye.

Recently, on the front page of Section C of the Wall Street Journal, a hedge fund manager who was also closing up shop (a $300 million fund), was quoted as saying, “What I have learned about the hedge fund business is that I hate it.” I could not agree more with that statement. I was in this game for the money. The low hanging fruit, i.e. idiots whose parents paid for prep school, Yale, and then the Harvard MBA, was there for the taking. These people who were (often) truly not worthy of the education they received (or supposedly received) rose to the top of companies such as AIG, Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers and all levels of our government. All of this behavior supporting the Aristocracy only ended up making it easier for me to find people stupid enough to take the other side of my trades. God bless America.

"War on Iran to spell Israel's collapse"

The guys from 'Government Sachs'

Get a load of the GS defenders vehemently dismissing criticism as kooky conspiracy theorists and sour grapes purveyors. Mmm hmm. - Ed.

Excerpt:

Not so fast, say Goldman’s supporters. They vehemently dismiss suggestions that Mr. Paulson’s team would elevate Goldman’s interests above those of other banks, homeowners and taxpayers. Such chatter, they say, is a paranoid theory peddled, almost always anonymously, by less successful rivals. Just add black helicopters, they joke.

“There is no conspiracy,” said Donald C. Langevoort, a law professor at Georgetown University. “Clearly if time were not a problem, you would have a committee of independent people vetting all of the potential conflicts, responding to questions whether someone ought to be involved with a particular aspect or project or not because of relationships with a former firm — but those things do take time and can’t be imposed in an emergency situation.”

In fact, Goldman’s admirers say, the firm’s ranks should be praised, not criticized, for taking a leadership role in the crisis.

HHS Declares 'Health Emergencies' to limit legal liability for anti-terrorism vaccines, drugs

October Surprises: The U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary, Michael Leavitt, has declared a series of 'public health emergencies' -- due to risk of a bioterrorism attack -- that continue through 2015.

  • Oct. 1, 2008: U.S. declares a 'public health emergency' due to the risk of a bioterrorism attack. HHS Secretary, Michael Leavitt, said the emergency began on Oct. 1 and would run through Dec. 31, 2015. The declaration establishes legal immunity for public and private officials who oversee the production or distribution of the anthrax vaccine.
  • Oct. 10, 2008: U.S. declares more 'public health emergencies' for smallpox, radiation sickness from the detonation of a nuclear device and poisoning from botulinum toxins, the active ingredient of Botox. This move provides the manufacturers, distributors, and others, of 'anti-terrorism' drugs and vaccines immunity from lawsuits, should injuries or deaths occur due to the drugs or vaccines.

Ray McGovern: Attack on Iran off the table?

On Sept. 23, the neo-conservative chiefs of the Washington Post’s editorial page mourned, in a tone much like what one hears on the death of a close friend, that “a military strike by the United States or Israel [on Iran is not] likely in the coming months.”

One could almost hear a wistful sigh, as they complained that efforts to stop Iran’s nuclear program have “slipped down Washington’s list of priorities … as Iran races toward accumulating enough uranium for a bomb.”

Tehran’s media claim the exercise will test its air force’s ability to fly to Israel and back without refueling.

JP Morgan responsible for the destruction of the US financial system

The colossus of JPMorgan is a monster, a predator, nurtured by pond scum. It has gobbled up Chase Manhattan, Manufacturers Hanover, Chemical Bank, Bank One, and more over the past two decades. Their profound presence in keeping the USTreasury Bond yields down can never be understated. They do so by managing 85% of the credit derivatives on the planet. They distorted usury prices, as in price of borrowed money, thus aggravating the LIBOR (London InterBank Offered Rate) market in a very visible manner.

"Fat and Lean Years" - Will Joseph Principle lead to Communism?

Right on schedule, the Rothschild-politician-puppets are promising to save us from the crisis caused by the Rothschild-banker-puppets by creating "a new world financial order."

Nicholas Sarkozy and Gordon Brown are calling for a "new international financial architecture for the global age" which will establish Rothschild global governance under the guise of "reforming and regulating" markets.

In a recent article "The Joseph Principle and Crisis Economics," Carl Teichrib, a young Manitoba researcher-farmer says the manipulation of calamities to re-make a society can be traced back to Biblical times. Joseph, one of the first Court Jews, is best known for predicting seven years of abundance (inflation) followed by seven years of famine (deflation.)

Financial storm of the century, or a turning of the tide?

Ladies and gentlemen, what you have just witnessed is an op carried out on the world. Previously, in The Beginning of A World Centralization Whirlwind, I wrote about how banks, legally able to treat credit card, student, auto, and house loans as assets, and then bundled them up into financial packages called asset backed securities and structured finance collaterilized debt obligations, since the risk was too great for them, they sold them to investors, who sold them on the stock markets for profit. All the banks that have crumbled and being bailed out were buying up and holding these securities. And so here we are, facing the storm.

In Case You Missed This: What If US Collapses? Soviet Collapse Lessons Every American Needs To Know

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. I am not an expert or a scholar or an activist. I am more of an eye-witness. I watched the Soviet Union collapse, and I have tried to put my observations into a concise message. I will leave it up to you to decide just how urgent a message it is.

My talk tonight is about the lack of collapse-preparedness here in the United States. I will compare it with the situation in the Soviet Union, prior to its collapse. The rhetorical device I am going to use is the "Collapse Gap" – to go along with the Nuclear Gap, and the Space Gap, and various other superpower gaps that were fashionable during the Cold War.

Howard Zinn on 911 and Griffin

To All Those Working for a Peaceful, Just and Environmentally Sustainable Society:

Whether one views the 9/11 “terrorist” attacks as blow back, a wake-up call, or an unjustified outrage, they have deeply affected the American psyche and our attitudes toward war, the future, and the world.

As a historian trying to understand this phenomenon, I tend to view the government’s behavior, before and after 9/11, in the context of its leaders’ past actions.

Before 9/11, Bush’s inner circle of neoconservative advisors proclaimed the need for a dramatic expansion of U.S. military might entailing “full spectrum dominance” over all other nations and regions (including outer space), long term petro-resource control with permanent Middle East bases, and a pre-emptive First Strike policy against recalcitrant states. In September 2000, however, the neocon’s flagship think tank, the Project for a New America Century, warned that this “process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event - like a new Pearl Harbor.”

After 9/11, this administration systematically nurtured the fear of further homeland attacks to justify its own assaults on constitutional rights as well as social and environmental programs that protected “the people” but fettered corporate power and control.

David Ray Griffi n’s book “The New Pearl Harbor -- Disturbing Questions About The Bush Administration and 9/11” asks “Were these tragedies simply the result of unprecedented failures and incompetence as the government maintains, or were there elements of foreknowledge and implicit welcome involved?” He attempts to answer this question, reviewing the facts, studying other possible interpretations of these facts, and observing the breakdown of the official story over time.

Griffin’s status as a renowned theologian and his systematic approach to the documented evidence lend this work unique importance and authority. Although still shunned by the mainstream media, his book has already encouraged many thousands to debate the case for possible government complicity and at the very least to demand a full, transparent and truly independent public inquiry.

Democracy requires citizen vigilance, informed debate and official accountability. In that spirit, David Ray Griffin’s book deserves to be widely read.

We all go through periods of depression; and in fact, it's a good sign that you are fully engaged with reality. But wallowing in feelings of helplessness and despair cedes power to those who wish to control the destiny of many. It's not always easy to pull yourself out of a tailspin, but anyone who has followed real news for a while knows that these waves come and go.

As individuals, we are not helpless. Be sure to check in on the main page for usexpat's posts. He's finding lots of positive information, so avail yourself. All people of good will deserve and can create something much better, but corruption still stands in the way. This is the problem that must be exposed and dealt with. Decisively. Permanently. And that is the work before us today.

For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. Luke 8:17

Is Martial Law Imminent?

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, 15,000 federal troops patrolled the streets of New Orleans. We were told that they were there to stop the looting and perform humanitarian duties. Of course, the widespread looting was brought under control, but under that control, many law-abiding citizens lost their rights as well. Soldiers as well as armed Blackwater contractors went house to house, detaining citizens and confiscating their firearms…Martial law had come to New Orleans.

The worst scene I can remember from those terrible days was of a patrol of U.S. soldiers arriving at the home of an elderly woman. The soldiers forced their way into the woman´s home, wrestled her to her kitchen floor, handcuffed her, and confiscated her revolver (her only protection against the violent criminals in that city). The woman cried and pleaded with the soldiers to allow her to protect herself.

Whitney: The end of Friedmanite Economics

1--On Monday, the stock market recorded its biggest one day gain in history on news that the G-7 had settled on a plan to recapitalize the banking system. The Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of England (BOE) all agreed to make direct capital injections into "systemically important" banks so they could resume lending and reduce stress in the credit markets. They also decided to insure deposits and to guarantee interbank lending. Do you think that these unprecedented steps will be enough to avert a meltdown of the financial system?

Robert Pollin: Of course, by Tuesday, the Dow fell again by over 733 points. Meanwhile, the Niekkii in Japan fell by 10 percent on Wednesday. So, thus far, the answer to whether these steps are enough, on their own, to avert a meltdown is a resounding “no.” At the same time, to be fair, these measures have yet to have any real effect on banks’ balance sheets. Thus far, the stock markets are only responding to their own guesses as to what benefits, if any, these measures will have on stabilizing the balance sheets of financial institutions.

But there is another element that came into play especially over the past day. That is the reality within financial markets that the economic crisis has spread beyond Wall Street itself. It is now clearly becoming a crisis—a recession or depression, choose your own term--spreading into the realm of jobs, incomes, public sector budgets, and private non-financial profits as well. This means that averting a meltdown of the financial system will also require a massive stimulus of the non-financial side of the economy. We haven’t heard yet about any significant plans along these lines.

Lindsey Williams dire economic forecast coming true

In a July 2008 broadcast on the Alex Jones radio show Lindsey Williams, author of “The Energy Non-Crisis” and former Chaplain on the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline told about his conversation with an un-named insider about the IMF’s plan to crash the world’s economy by flooding the world oil market with cheap oil. When most experts were predicting oil to get to 200 dollars a barrel, Lindsey Williams said he was told that oil would be as low as 50 dollars per barrel. Recent oil discoveries (Reuters article) along with falling oil prices seem to be backing up his claim. Mr. Williams also predicted that John McCain would be their man in the White House, even if “an event” would have to be staged to insure that happens. Other guests include Dr. Stanley Monteith and Bob Chapman of the International Forecaster.

Corporate Psychopathy

In psychiatry there is a diagnostic entity variously known as psychopath, sociopath and antisocial personality disorder. The central feature of this disorder is the failure to develop any ethical standards of social behavior, The concept of "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" is foreign to the psychopath. That remarkable advice is replaced by "do unto others as it pleases you regardless of consequences." We do not know for sure the cause of such behavior, whether it is genetic in origin, the result of early developmental trauma, or a combination of the two. The outstanding feature is that the psychopath has a natural talent for using and exploiting others and does so with such skill that true motives remain concealed by ingratiating ways and apparent normality. At some point the bubble bursts and the victim awakens to the reality that they have been taken.

Must read: It's too soon, and it's too late

The Fallacy of Insufficient Cynicism strikes the American people again, especially the younger ones. - Ed.

It's too soon, and it's too late.

In "A Bill That Can Never Be Paid," WP asks how come the American people don't rise up in anger. It's because they can't imagine what's coming down on them. They think this isn't going to be any worse than, say, the S&L screwing they took during the '80s.

Then there's the fact that the Reagan Revolution is now thirty years old. Those of us over 30 years of age are living with an entire generation that, collectively, have no memory of the world that was before Reagan. So far as they're concerned, we haven't lost a thing and they don't yet understand what we older folks are all upset about.

Reaganism, so far as I can tell, has succeeded beyond even Rappin' Ron's wildest hopes. Between GOP liars, talk-radio hate merchants, and free-market mythology, the political landscape is changed so that electing liberals is impossible. Democrats have been forced so far to the Right that the two parties are now effectively one and that one is Reaganite conservative. Politicians no longer squabble over ideology. They squabble over loot.

In just a matter of days, we have seen literally trillions of dollars offered to the financial services sector by national treasuries and central banks across the globe. Britain alone has put $1 trillion at the disposal of the bankers, traders, lenders and speculators; and this has been surpassed by the total package of public money that Washington is shoveling into the financial furnaces of Wall Street and the banks. These radical efforts are being replicated on a slightly smaller scale in France, Germany, Italy, Russia and many other countries.

Of course right now these derivatives are failing and no one is profiting. U.S. BUYING INTO FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS

This move, announced today, is absolute confirmation for me that this is an intentioned shut down of the economy. Each bank or financial institution that the Treasury buys into will give it (and Goldman Sachs) the power to shut each bank down and to decide when it shuts down. It couldn't be more transparent. They're going to turn out the lights in an orderly fashion and it's obviously an attempt at a controlled fast crash. They've only got three months left in office. That would essentially make Barack Obama an economic janitor employed by the same firm. I can just hear Bush and Cheney cracking a joke about it.

McCain and Palin are playing with fire

by Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Spendid Suns

I prefer to discuss politics through my novels, but I am truly dismayed these days. Twice last week alone, speakers at McCain-Palin rallies have referred to Sen. Barack Obama, with unveiled scorn, as Barack Hussein Obama.

Never mind that this evokes -- and brazenly tries to resurrect -- the unsavory, cruel days of our past that we thought we had left behind. Never mind that such jeers are deeply offensive to millions of peaceful, law-abiding Muslim Americans who must bear the unveiled charge, made by some supporters of Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin, that Obama's middle name makes him someone to distrust -- and, judging by some of the crowd reactions at these rallies, someone to persecute or even kill. None of that was evident yesterday, other than the usual flurry of high tech incremental developments, none of which comes anywhere near making "Mr. Ure's Absolutely Gotta Run Out and Buy One" list.
