The Dollar Conundrum: Poison or Cure?

Either the dollar is defended with high interest rates or it will collapse under the tsunami of debt/money expansion. If it collapses then the cost of imports will skyrocket. Either way, the credit-addicted U.S. economy will implode.


The choice just ahead is stark: either passively watch the dollar collapse as the tsunami of money expansion and Federal borrowing slams it or start defending it with much higher interest rates. Either way, the credit-dependent U.S. economy will be unable to borrow freely at low cost from the rest of the world.

The blogosphere is chockful of reports documenting our trading partners' not-so-subtle stampede to the dollar exit--is there any mystery here? None whatsoever. Even a so-called reserve currency like the dollar responds to supply and demand: as the Fed pushes money expansion up by 100% (you've seen the hockey-stick charts by now) and the U.S. Treasury borrows trillions of dollars to fund a widening deficit and various trillion-dollar bailouts of failed and/or fraud-filled/looted industries, then this burgeoning supply overwhelms demand, pushing down the value.

Woman who missed Air France flight dies in car crash

An Italian woman who did not board the Air France flight that crashed in the Atlantic, killing all its 228 passengers, has died in a car accident.

Johanna Ganthaler, a pensioner from the northern Italian province of Bolzano-Bozen, and her husband Kurt missed the June 1 Air France flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris after arriving late at the airport.

Johanna and Kurt Ganthaler were vacationing in Brazil, when they missed the ill-fated Air France flight and were forced to catch a different flight later that day.

Just days later after returning to Europe, Johanna lost her life when their car went off the road near the Austrian city of Kufstein.

WHO finally declares "the pandemic," presumably allowing the official response plan to unfold. Oh joy.

An emergency meeting of the World Health Organization (WHO) has ended by declaring the influenza A(H1N1) or “swine flu” outbreak a global pandemic.

According to the world’s peak health body more than 28,000 cases of influenza A (H1N1) have been reported globally and over 141 confirmed deaths.

In at least two regions of the world the virus is spreading, with rising cases being seen in the UK, Australia, Japan and Chile.

One factor which prompted the move to a level six pandemic was that in the southern hemisphere, the virus seems to be crowding out normal seasonal influenza.

WHO poised to declare first flu pandemic since 1968

GENEVA, June 11 (Reuters) - The World Health Organisation (WHO) was poised on Thursday to declare that the new H1N1 virus has caused the first influenza pandemic in more than 40 years, health sources said on Thursday.

The move will trigger heightened health measures in the WHO's 193 member states as authorities brace for the worldwide spread of the virus that has so far caused mainly mild illness.

Flu experts advising WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan, who were due to convene at 1000 GMT, were expected to recommend moving to the top phase 6 on the WHO's six-point scale, the sources said.

More drug pushing for big pharma

Three antipsychotic drugs that have long been prescribed to adolescents even though they were not approved for such use by the Food and Drug Administration deserve to have the regulatory agency's imprimatur, an FDA advisory committee said yesterday.

After weighing the costs and benefits of prescribing the antipsychotic drugs Seroquel, Geodon and Zyprexa for children 10 to 17 years old who suffer from schizophrenia and manic depression, the medical experts recommended that the drugs be approved for such use.

The regulatory agency is not required to follow the recommendations by the medical panel but usually does. In a briefing document, Thomas Laughren, the FDA's director of the division of psychiatry products, indicated that the agency's evaluation of clinical trials conducted by AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Eli Lilly, had shown the medications were effective in children. The risk profile of the drugs among children, Laughren added, was similar to the side effects they caused among adults, for whom the drugs are already approved.

Air France chief questions sensor role in crash

PARIS, June 11 (Reuters) - Air France is not yet convinced that faulty speed sensors were to blame for the loss of one of its planes over the Atlantic, but it is replacing old sensors as a precaution, the airline's chief executive said on Thursday.

Pierre-Henri Gourgeon told reporters that Air France was in a state of shock over the worst disaster in its 75 year history and expected more information about what happened within a week.

In his dissent Scalia wrote:

Tuesday, 28 September 2004: If you have visited this page before you will know of the story told by the scientist I named "Deep Shield".

I received word early today that "Deep Shield" had committed suicide late last Sunday afternoon at his home in the Emeryville/Berkeley/Oakland area of California.

The method used was to run a hose from his car's exhaust pipe into the closed car in his garage. His wife found his body and she says that there was no suicide note.

However her late husband's behaviour and mood for the past month had been extremely agitated and dark.

The police are not pursuing this as a homicide because it is, in their mind, a clear and cut case of suicide. There will be the usual inquest/autopsy and most likely a very quiet funeral due to the nature of the death.

The congressional panel investigating what happened to all that bank bailout money has issued a subpoena to the Federal Reserve, asking them to hand over all documents relating to the takeover of Merrill Lynch by the Bank of America.

Pessimism hovers over Bibi's upcoming policy speech

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to deliver a key diplomatic policy speech next week, which analysts cautioned would unlikely bring any tangible impetus into the stagnant peace process with the Palestinians.

The planned address is regarded to some extent as a response to U.S. President Barack Obama's landmark speech to the Muslim world in Cairo last week, during which Obama urged Israel to freeze settlement expansion and accept the two-state principle.

Prior to his speech next Sunday, Netanyahu is expected to consult with other cabinet ministers, most of whom are from the traditionally hawkish right-wing bloc, and to meet Obama's special envoy George Mitchell.

While it is all but certain that Netanyahu will dwell upon the Iranian nuclear issue and the Syrian peace track, the address will lay emphasis on the Israeli-Palestinian front, said Shmuel Bar, a political expert at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel.

Regarding this decades-old conflict, Netanyahu would remind the Palestinians first and foremost of their obligations in order for peace talks to resume, including renouncing violence, building responsible institutions and ending Hamas' control of the Gaza Strip, said Bar.

Australia: Privacy groups fear Medishare card scheme

PATIENTS' private medical files will be shared among health professionals under a Rudd Government plan for a contentious healthcare card.

From the middle of next year, the Medicare card will provide doctors, dentists, pharmacists and paramedics with an encyclopedia-like file on patients' medical histories, medications and treatments.

Health Minister Nicola Roxon said patients would receive better treatment, as medical errors and the expense of performing lost tests were slashed.

"We've made a decision that every Australian will be allocated a unique health identity," Ms Roxon told The Courier-Mail in an exclusive interview.

"It would be a card, most likely with a chip that would store your information on it, which you would then provide to health professionals and give them access to it when you wanted them to see it."

North Korea: "We'll strike back mercilessly"

SEOUL - NORTH Korea said on Tuesday it would use its nuclear weapons both to defend itself and to carry out a reprisal for any attack by its enemies.

FEMA: National Level Exercise 2009

National Level Exercise 2009 (NLE 09) is scheduled for July 27 through July 31, 2009. NLE 09 will be the first major exercise conducted by the United States government that will focus exclusively on terrorism prevention and protection, as opposed to incident response and recovery.

NLE 09 is designated as a Tier I National Level Exercise. Tier I exercises (formerly known as the Top Officials exercise series or TOPOFF) are conducted annually in accordance with the National Exercise Program (NEP), which serves as the nation's overarching exercise program for planning, organizing, conducting and evaluating national level exercises. The NEP was established to provide the U.S. government, at all levels, exercise opportunities to prepare for catastrophic crises ranging from terrorism to natural disasters.

NLE 09 is a White House directed, Congressionally- mandated exercise that includes the participation of all appropriate federal department and agency senior officials, their deputies, staff and key operational elements. In addition, broad regional participation of state, tribal, local, and private sector is anticipated. Pope 'very distressed' by Irish sexual abuse he helped to cover up

POPE BENEDICT XVI showed his distress at the Ryan report on child abuse at religious institutions in Ireland during a half-hour meeting in the Vatican yesterday evening with Archbishop of Armagh Cardinal Seán Brady and Archbishop of Dublin Dr Diarmuid Martin.

Asked what had most disturbed the pope in the Ryan report, Archbishop Martin replied: "This is a different case from many others because it is about the institutionalisation of a problem."

However, there was no comment from the pope or his officials last night. The Vatican has refrained from making any comment on the Ryan report, with official spokesman Fr Federico Lombardi commenting merely that this was "a matter for the local church".

The church leaders told The Irish Times after their meeting that Pope Benedict had listened attentively to what they had to say.

"He listened very carefully, he was obviously very distressed about what we had to tell him. In fact, he allowed us to do most of the talking and he listened very sympathetically and attentively to what we said," said Cardinal Brady. "He obviously has been informed about it ," said Archbishop Martin, adding: "He didn't read the entire thing, but he was aware of it and very distressed by it."

The difference between leaadership and domination

It is commonplace to refer to our dearly elected as leaders. But are they leaders? Who or what do they lead? Using the word in the strict sense of going first while everyone else follows, our elected officialdom consistently takes the country in the wrong direction; away from where the people who live and work here, by vast majority, want to go.

That is not leadership. It is something else entirely.

I think it's important to define leadership and understand its purpose. I have some strong ideas on leadership and what a leader is. I offer them to you for your perusal and consideration. If you find that you agree with my take on what a leader is and what they are supposed to do, then you can decide for yourself what our dearly elected in Washington D.C. are actually up to. You may come to the same conclusion that I have, that they are not by any stretch "leaders".

There is an easily discerned line between leaders and tyrants. It would do us well to know the difference.

Key figures in global battle against illegal arms trade lost in Air France crash

AMID THE media frenzy and speculation over the disappearance of Air France's ill-fated Flight 447, the loss of two of the world's most prominent figures in the war on the illegal arms trade and international drug trafficking has been virtually overlooked.

Pablo Dreyfus, a 39-year-old Argentine who was travelling with his wife Ana Carolina Rodrigues aboard the doomed flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris, had worked tirelessly with the Brazilian authorities to stem the flow of arms and ammunition that for years has fuelled the bloody turf wars waged by drug gangs in Rio's sprawling favelas.

Also travelling with Dreyfus on the doomed flight was his friend and colleague Ronald Dreyer, a Swiss diplomat and co-ordinator of the Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence who had worked with UN missions in El Salvador, Mozambique, Azerbaijan, Kosovo and Angola. Both men were consultants at the Small Arms Survey, an independent think tank based at Geneva's Graduate Institute of International Studies. The Survey said on its website that Dryer had helped mobilise the support of more than 100 countries to the cause of disarmament and development.

Sotomayor member of female version of Bohemian Grove

Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor last year accepted an invitation to join the Belizean Grove, an elite but little-known women’s-only group.

Founded nearly 10 years ago as the female answer to the Bohemian Grove — a secretive all-male club whose members have included former U.S. presidents and top business leaders — the Belizean Grove has about 125 members, including Army generals, Wall Street executives and former ambassadors.

Clinton hints at attacking Iran sites

WASHINGTON - US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton referred to the possibility of a "first strike" on Iran's nuclear sites "the way that we did attack Iraq."

"They might have some other enemies that would do that to them," she said.

Over 60% French lose confidence in finding true reason for air crash

PARIS, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Over 60 percent French have lost confidence in finding the true cause for Monday's disappearance of Air France Flight AF447, a latest poll published on Thursday showed.

Among the 18,604 persons inquired by French daily Le Figaro, 61 percent answered "no" to the question that "Do you think it is possible to recover what caused the crash."

The major reason for their negative answers, they said, was the authorities' announcement that as there were massive difficulties in recovering the plane's black box recorders, [IT'S TOO HARD] [SOME] people might never know the real reason for the disaster.

Some respondents expressed worries that some people [The Damn Conspiracy Theorist, no doubts] might take earlier hypotheses on the cause of the crash as facts, making it impossible to find the truth. [????? HOW SO??????]

On the other hand, 39 percent respondents gave positive answers, pinning their hopes on high technology and expertise in the 21st century. [on the authorities, in other words]

Some people in the survey insisted that it was important to find the cause of the accident, to prevent similar tragedies in the future. [naturally, as long as the answers don't point back to the authorities...]

Air France Flight AF447, an Airbus A330, vanished early Monday morning over the Atlantic Ocean en route to Paris from Rio de Janeiro, with 228 people on board.

Let's recap what this survey says, a large survey (18,ooo+ people) that had to have been conducted immediately after this "accident" in order to be tabulated and reported a whole five days later.

People are immediately "losing confidence" (read giving up finding the truth), because the authorities say it's too hard to find the black boxes.

SOME people worry that OTHER people who speculate as to the real cause of the crash (read Conspiracy Theorists) will make it "impossible to find the truth." Therefore, you see, the people trying to find out the truth become the culprits in obscuring the truth, but this curious twist in logic remains unexplained. How does that happen? Could it have something to do with the intelligence community muddying the waters and setting up false leads and limited hangouts and every manner of counter-intelligence to PREVENT the truth from being exposed while DISCREDITING the people who seek the truth? LIKE THIS SURVEY????

The "Hopeful" (read "Good") people wisely RELY ON THE AUTHORITIES who possess the best technology and expertise to uncover what really happened, and there are other people who INSIST (read "because they are MORAL") that an answer will be forthcoming to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Surely it won't be a TRUE answer, just an AUTHORITATIVE one.

You know, it hardly seems possible that the French people would be as dense as Americans, but maybe the Chinese people need to think so. Who conducted this survey? Who participated? Where are the questions? And are you fucking kidding me?

I’ve seen one functioning value which Twitter provides. Twitter allows you to determine the useful value of any person in your life simply by discovering whether they use it or not.

Television "Diplomocy"

The Alhurra television channel is an American foreign policy tool, and Joaquin Blaya, one of four members of the US Broadcasting Board of Governors who oversee the channel, makes no bones about it.

"Yes, it is part of our public diplomacy. Alhurra today has a budget of $126m a year. We don't carry any advertising. We are subsidised by the American taxpayer. The American taxpayer is not paying for entertainment for people living in the Middle East. They are paying for the promotion of freedom and democracy, through news and information," he says.

Alhurra, for non-Arab readers unfamiliar with it, is a television channel that broadcasts mainly from America across 22 countries in the Middle East region. According to Blaya, it has a weekly audience of 27 million people, and is watched in, for example, 55 percent of Iraq homes, 55 percent of Syrian homes, 30 percent of Oman homes, and 27 percent of Moroccan homes.

...In May, 2007, Blaya was summoned to testify to a subcommittee of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The hearing was prompted by revelations that, on several occasions, Alhurra had broadcast messages against American interests, including "a 68-minute call to arms against Israelis by a senior figure of Hezbollah; deferential coverage of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's Holocaust denial conference; and a factually flawed piece on a splinter group of Orthodox Jews who oppose the state of Israel."

According to ABC News, Blaya told the hearing that important decisions regarding Alhurra's output were being left in the hands of "reporters and producers who are hastily hired Arabic-speaking journalists with insufficient understanding of Western journalistic practices or the network's pro-Western mission." I know what happened to the Air France Flight 447

According to Air France CEO Pierre-Henry Gourgeon the Air France AirBus flying from Rio to Paris transmitted "a succession of a dozen technical messages" indicated that "several electrical systems had broken down" which caused a "totally unprecedented situation in the plane."

Gourgeon is wrong. The events that resulted in the death of 128 people over the Atlantic were precedented. There have been several similar events.

Reuters has reported that AirBus is claiming that the Airbus A330 has a good safety record, with no fatal accidents on a commercial flight. This is a falsehood that Reuters did not bother to correct.

In Miami in 1999 pilot and co-pilot of an American Airlines Airbus A300 about to land suddenly lost control of the plane to an exogenous agency. The rudder moved several times on its own. "The rudder movements were extreme" said the NTSP.

The Big Collapse could be very near, by Robert Wenzel

If you would have asked me even two weeks ago if collapse was imminent, I would have said it was highly unlikely, now I am saying it is possible. Bernanke may be able to patch things up short-term, if he is lucky, but in the long term the U.S. financial structure is in serious trouble. There is just too much Treasury debt that needs to be raised. An international panic out of Treasury securities, even a slow controlled panic, means the Fed will be the major buyer. This will ultimately mean record inflation.

And keep this in mind, we have never seen a collapse of a currency like the dollar. Even the hyperinflation during Germany's Wiemar Period can not serve as an example. Since the dollar is the reserve currency of most of the world, a panic out of the dollar means more dollars will return to the U.S. shores than any country has ever experienced.

Other countries have had collapsed currencies, but never in the history of world of finance has so much currency been held outside a country of issue that could come flying back, almost on a moments notice. If the panic out of the dollar starts, even if Bernanke stops printing money (unlikely), all the dollars flying back into the U.S. could cause a huge price inflation all on its own.

N Korea ready to launch missile

There is growing speculation that North Korea may be preparing to launch another new medium or long-range missile.

Satellite images from the GlobalSecurity website show the new Tongchang-ni launch site in the North's west coast near China and is reportedly ready for use after nearly a decade of construction.

The launch tower and what appears to be construction materials on the launch pad are seen in the images, according to Tim Brown, a senior fellow with GlobalSecurity.

He speculated the debris may be there to make the pad appear as though it is still under construction.

"The launch pad appears to be operational,'' Brown said.

It is immoral for the sponsors of the negotiations to be partisan and vilify the democratically elected representatives of the weak party, and to refuse to acknowledge the weak party's right to political self-determination and territorial integrity.

And when push comes to shove, Jews will go along with the activists who lead the organized Jewish community. One can talk about U.S. interests or Israeli interests all one wants, but this is a fight to the finish.

How can Obama make him give in?

No one imagines he will reconsider the military aid the U.S. accords Israel each year. Besides, there is every chance that Congress would oppose it.

So what can he do?

Here are four ideas floating around these days:

1. He could freeze the guaranteed credit that America allocates to Israel. That's how George H.W. Bush convinced Itzhak Shamir to participate in the Madrid conference.

2. He could ask the IRS to take a look at the American NGOs participating in the financing of the settlements and to which contributions are made, just as Washington Post columnist, David Ignatius, recently revealed some that were tax deductible.

3. He could take the initiative of diplomatically isolating Israel from the Security Council by submitting a resolution condemning the settlements (I hardly believe he would go that far).

4. He could incite Europeans not to "build up" their relations with Jerusalem as is expected during a reunion between the EU and Israel next June 15 (a reunion already postponed for this reason, a postponement which, among others, would explain the cancellation of Netanyahu's visit to Paris).

U.S. counterterrorism officials have authenticated a video by an al Qaeda recruiter threatening to smuggle a biological weapon into the United States via tunnels under the Mexico border, the latest sign of the terrorist group's determination to stage another mass-casualty attack on the U.S. homeland.

Israeli whines, "We've lost our spark."

Completely by chance, I flew to the United States the same night that Prime Minister Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu went there for his meeting with President Barack Obama. But if I had to rely on the New York media to learn that the visit was occurring, I might have missed it - because most media outlets barely mentioned it.

The planned appointment of a Hispanic woman judge to the Supreme Court captured the lead headlines. The fact that 800 unemployed people stood in line to apply for a job as a school janitor also made headlines. And as a rule, Obama gets most of the headlines, due to his dizzying whirl of activity. By comparison, Bibi might as well not exist.

As someone who has accompanied most Israeli premiers on their trips abroad, I was always amazed by the electricity they generated during these visits, whether positive or negative, as well as by the maneuverability that Israeli leaders enjoyed in America. If the president was unsympathetic, they went to Congress; if Congress was unsupportive, they went back to the president. If the State Department imposed a veto, Jewish organizations would pressure the president, who wanted to be reelected, to impose his will on the secretary of state.

In Israel, Obama is accused of 'anti-semitism'

An Israeli parliamentarian accuses the Obama administration of 'anti-Semitism' ahead of a planned speech addressing the Muslim world.

Knesset (parliament) member Yaakov Katz, head of the National Union party, said Wednesday that US President Barack Obama's repeated calls for halting the expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank is "nothing less than anti-Semitism," Israel's Arutz Sheva reported.

He also accused the White House of following the path of his predecessors in stunting the growth of the population of Jewish people in the West Bank.

Katz says calling on Tel Aviv to freeze settlement activities means denying the Jewish people the right to give birth.

"If someone says you can't add a room to a house, or build a kindergarten or a grocery or anything else, it means that 650,000 Jews in Jerusalem and elsewhere cannot grow, cannot give birth," Katz told Israel's national radio.

Israeli proposal: make Jordan the official Palestinian homeland

Amman, Jordan; and Jerusalem – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior members of his cabinet have pushed back hard against a renewed US demand to end settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territories. Interior Minister Eli Yishai said Sunday that it amounted to "expulsion."

But 53 Israeli parliamentarians have moved to explore another kind of expulsion: Under a proposal to be reviewed this week, Jordan would become the official homeland for Palestinians now living in the West Bank.

Among the challenges facing the proposal is this: nobody asked Jordan if it would support such a plan.

Not surprisingly, it doesn't.

Medical bills play a role in 62% of bankruptcies

President Obama's push for healthcare reforms gets a boost today from a new study by Harvard University researchers that shows a sizable increase over six years in bankruptcies caused in part by ever-higher medical expenses.

The study found that medical bills, plus related problems such as lost wages for the ill and their caregivers, contributed to 62% of all bankruptcies filed in 2007. On the campaign trail last year and in the White House this year, Obama had cited an earlier study by the same authors showing that such expenses played a part in 55% of bankruptcies in 2001.

An invitation to the local lodge

I run a small business in Canada and acquired a client who was a freemason. He took some time to tell me how amazing it was and that I should consider joining. I paid very little attention to it at the time but we remained in contact. The following year I began to do my research to see if perhaps it was for me. I had heard good things and bad things (horrendous things) about freemasonry. I knew a few freemasons who were all fairly successful financially so I though I would check it out. I had a couple of guys visit my home to talk about it with me. They explained that it was a group of guys getting together and acting out ancient rituals etc. There were a couple questions they had for me:
