I, unlike many people writing on the Middle East, have actually had dealings with senior people, at the highest levels, in both Israel and in Arab states. I try to understand both sides as well as trying to see through the BS and spin. I want Israel to exist in peace and prosperity and the same for the Arab states and Iran.
The hard liners in Israel have of late benefited enormously from AIPAC and the lock on Congress and several presidential administrations that it has had. Many Jews in America and in Israel have come to the conclusion that this influence has not been good for Israel nor America. The war in Iraq was driven by lies from the neocons sending American/British/etc. troops to fight Arabs, using western money, for a concept of a Greater Israel - a Israel that is dominate in the Middle East and cannot be checkmated by any other regional power. The drumbeat for a another war, this time on Iran, comes from the neocons and AIPAC. It is no accident that both Obama and McCain tried to outdo one another in kissing up to AIPAC and the AIPAC agenda towards Iran.
The trouble with this craziness is that it is simply too late in human history for such aggressive empire building. For all the hype about a possible Iranian nuclear weapons program and the danger from same, the real danger to Israel and to the entire world is from the existing very advanced biowar program that Iran has. When the Soviet Union fell many of the scientists in the Soviet advanced biowar program were made destitute, out of work and flat broke. The Iranians hired as many as possible at US$5,000 each per month - a truly massive sum for out of work ex-Soviet scientists 15 to 18 years ago. These ex-Soviet scientists created one very advanced and very scary biowar industrial base for Iran using recombination DNA genetic engineering technology.
The Iranian advanced biological warfare program is one of the most advanced in the world today. They have created literally hundreds of new man made diseases that can spread from human to human like wildfire. Diseases that the human race has no immunity to, that are designed to kill and kill in very large numbers. The Iranians, having seen what befell Saddam once he destroyed all of his chemical and biowar agents have worked to create a MAD (mutually assured destruction) environment with Israel and the United States and western powers. They have several tens of thousands of missiles and rockets aimed at Israel from Lebanon, Syria, Iran, and Palestine. These have a mix of standard conventional, advanced conventional (fuel air explosive), chemical, advanced biological, and radiological warheads. They are capable of effectively destroying the state of Israel and its population. The advanced biological technology possessed by Iran can be equally used on North America and Europe to cause a level of diseased caused deaths that would be similar to the Black Death Plague of the Middle Ages that killed off a third to half of the European population. Of course, Israel and the United States (plus the United Kingdom and France) have nuclear weapons that could effectively destroy all life in Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine. That's why we call the environment a mutually assured destruction capacity.

Roubini predicts financial system shutting down for 1-2 weeks
Oct. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Hundreds of hedge funds will fail and policy makers may need to shut financial markets for a week or more as the crisis forces investors to dump assets, New York University Professor Nouriel Roubini said.
``We've reached a situation of sheer panic,'' Roubini, who predicted the financial crisis in 2006, told a conference of hedge-fund managers in London today. ``There will be massive dumping of assets'' and ``hundreds of hedge funds are going to go bust,'' he said.

In 2001 the frequency of White House visits by Alan Greenspan increased.
Greenspan endorsed President Bush’s March 2001 tax cuts for the rich. More such cuts took place in May 2003.
Signs of recession had begun to show in early 2001. The stock market crashed after 9/11. The U.S. invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 and Iraq in March 2003.
It's different this time: Housing, deflation & depression
Now that the economy is careening from a systemic financial meltdown into depression, it is easy pundit pickings to "compare and contrast" this depression with the Great Depression of the 30s and with the Stagflation of the 70s.
We've all seen a number of these analyses, and I have yet to find one which illuminates housing's quite different characteristics in the deflationary 30s, the inflationary 70s and the present. Here is my attempt to draw distinctions between those past depressions and the one we are now entering.
Why single out housing? For the simple reason it is the primary reservoir of both psychological and "real" wealth (i.e. assets as measured in constant dollars or purchasing-power parity.)
Confusion reigns: A crisis-driven global rush to dollar liquidity is not deflation
In the crisis stage of a debt deflation, defined by Fisher and Minsky as a reduction in debt financing, credit and money market panic causes banks to stop lending and borrowing from each other, pay off existing loans to shore up their balance sheets, and build reserves against expected future losses. This creates a short term spike in demand for the currency in which the debt is denominated, in the current case dollars. To the uninitiated, this looks like monetary deflation. A strengthening currency and falling interest rates also characterizes monetary deflation. That can in time produce commodity price deflation, so the confusion is understandable. But don't be fooled.

The charitable foundation created by the founder of software giant Microsoft said in a statement that the grants were designed to "explore bold and largely unproven ways to improve global health."
The grants were awarded for research into preventing or curing infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis and limiting the emergence of drug resistance.
They are the first round of funding for the Gates Foundation's "Grand Challenges Explorations," a five-year 100-million-dollar initiative to "promote innovative ideas in global health."

Israel gets real on Iran
Washington On the eve of his departure from political life, outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert delivered a stinging parting shot – putting under question not only the wisdom of holding on to Palestinian land, but also the feasibility of an Israeli military strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

I was just listening to Ron Paul on the latest Bail-Out of banks. He disapproved of the Bail-Out because he claims that it will destroy the financial system as we know it by destroying the dollar's value and creating hyper-inflation.
Ron Paul said "you can not just create trillions of dollars out of thin air without creating inflation". Paul's conclusions are based upon the idea of demand pull inflation. This means a situation where excess amounts of money are chasing a static or near static amount of goods and services.

PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP will provide internal controls for the government's $700 billion bailout fund. Ernst & Young will provide general accounting and consulting. The Treasury Department said the first phase of the three-year contracts will be worth $191,469.27 and $492.006.95, respectively.
That sort of specific detail is lacking in the agreements themselves. The Pricewaterhouse Coopers contract released by the Treasury Department on Tuesday has blacked-out text in the area covering the firm's bid, and also conceals the name of the PricewaterhouseCoopers partner who signed the deal.

I Don't Mind If You Keep Voting, But Do You Mind If I Keep Laughing While You Do?
I don’t care who the candidate is. I don’t care what issues to which he seems to gravitate. I don’t care about his record, his leadership qualities, the apparent first-lady-ness of his wife (or her husband), his insider-ness or his outsider-ness, his race, his height, his weight, how well he speaks, how wonderfully he photographs, the nation of his birth, how likely it might be that he’s fun to drink with, or his appreciation for unique uses for a fine cigar.
More importantly though, given two other observations, voting strikes me as an incredible waste of time for anyone who is ultimately interested in two rather vital issues: personal liberty and personal responsibility.

If there is one thing I hate, it’s being patronized by educators that believe they have the final word because they work with “political theory” everyday. This time it’s Noam Chomsky that is doing it. He says that of course the American political elite and their manufacturing and the financial establishments run the government. The political and wealthy elite have always run this country, and this according to what he attributes to James Madison, was always the founders intent. The appearance of cronyism and an exclusive club that runs the country, the “political elite” have always maintained power. The only time a true populist movement took hold in Washington is when Andrew Jackson became president and ushered in Jacksonian democracy, threw out the central bank, and fired his cabinet for not addressing the needs of the people by arguing with him about policy.

Les Vis: Have fun bending over for the Catch 22
Tap, tap, tap….. Hmmmm… finger drumming on the table top… restless stretching and reaching… got an itch under my shoulder blade… confusion… a little I guess. Like ‘tells’ in poker, I’m getting some reads but the betting doesn’t reflect the hands I’m seeing when I call. What’s going on? I guess I can’t ask Marvin Gaye. You know what? If you study world history then you are probably already aware that our once great country has become what our ancestors fought and died to stop. Fascists! From the introduction of Nazi procedures and symbolisms in our government and military, to the foundation of organizations like The DHS which is nothing more than the Stasi with a new name. Letter: Andrew Lahde, Lahde Capital Management
Today I write not to gloat. Given the pain that nearly everyone is experiencing, that would be entirely inappropriate. Nor am I writing to make further predictions, as most of my forecasts in previous letters have unfolded or are in the process of unfolding. Instead, I am writing to say goodbye.
Recently, on the front page of Section C of the Wall Street Journal, a hedge fund manager who was also closing up shop (a $300 million fund), was quoted as saying, “What I have learned about the hedge fund business is that I hate it.” I could not agree more with that statement. I was in this game for the money. The low hanging fruit, i.e. idiots whose parents paid for prep school, Yale, and then the Harvard MBA, was there for the taking. These people who were (often) truly not worthy of the education they received (or supposedly received) rose to the top of companies such as AIG, Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers and all levels of our government. All of this behavior supporting the Aristocracy only ended up making it easier for me to find people stupid enough to take the other side of my trades. God bless America.

Large scale Iranian air force exercise simulates attack on Israel
DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the drill beginning Thursday, Oct. 16 in northern Iran, is Tehran’s rejoinder to Israel’s big aerial maneuver last June.
Then, more than 100 Israeli fighter-bombers went through their paces over the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas, roughly the same distance from Israel as Iran.

Financial storm of the century, or a turning of the tide?
Ladies and gentlemen, what you have just witnessed is an op carried out on the world. Previously, in The Beginning of A World Centralization Whirlwind, I wrote about how banks, legally able to treat credit card, student, auto, and house loans as assets, and then bundled them up into financial packages called asset backed securities and structured finance collaterilized debt obligations, since the risk was too great for them, they sold them to investors, who sold them on the stock markets for profit. All the banks that have crumbled and being bailed out were buying up and holding these securities. And so here we are, facing the storm.

Whether one views the 9/11 “terrorist” attacks as blow back, a wake-up call, or an unjustified outrage, they have deeply affected the American psyche and our attitudes toward war, the future, and the world.
As a historian trying to understand this phenomenon, I tend to view the government’s behavior, before and after 9/11, in the context of its leaders’ past actions.
Before 9/11, Bush’s inner circle of neoconservative advisors proclaimed the need for a dramatic expansion of U.S. military might entailing “full spectrum dominance” over all other nations and regions (including outer space), long term petro-resource control with permanent Middle East bases, and a pre-emptive First Strike policy against recalcitrant states. In September 2000, however, the neocon’s flagship think tank, the Project for a New America Century, warned that this “process of transformation, even if it brings revolutionary change, is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event - like a new Pearl Harbor.”
After 9/11, this administration systematically nurtured the fear of further homeland attacks to justify its own assaults on constitutional rights as well as social and environmental programs that protected “the people” but fettered corporate power and control.
David Ray Griffi n’s book “The New Pearl Harbor -- Disturbing Questions About The Bush Administration and 9/11” asks “Were these tragedies simply the result of unprecedented failures and incompetence as the government maintains, or were there elements of foreknowledge and implicit welcome involved?” He attempts to answer this question, reviewing the facts, studying other possible interpretations of these facts, and observing the breakdown of the official story over time.
Griffin’s status as a renowned theologian and his systematic approach to the documented evidence lend this work unique importance and authority. Although still shunned by the mainstream media, his book has already encouraged many thousands to debate the case for possible government complicity and at the very least to demand a full, transparent and truly independent public inquiry.
Democracy requires citizen vigilance, informed debate and official accountability. In that spirit, David Ray Griffin’s book deserves to be widely read.
