RUSSIAN authorities have charged a sailor with causing the death of 20 people on a nuclear-powered submarine.
Investigators studying the accident, the worst to strike the Russian navy since the death of the crew of the Kursk in 2000, say that the unnamed submariner "set off the anti-fire system without authorisation and for no reason".Once activated, the system pumped the deadly oxygen- removing gas freon into a compartment in the boat's bow, suffocating its victims. A further 21 required hospital treatment.
