(July 14, 2009) Several months ago, I wrote an on-line article about the Precautionary Principle.(1)
This principle is more well known in Europe than here in the US. This is much to our detriment.
There are three elements in taking a precautionary approach:
1. When we have reasonable suspicion of harm
2. When there is scientific uncertainty
3. We then have a duty to take action to prevent harm
The Precautionary Principle should/must be in place for all experimental drugs, genetically modified organisms, untested and/or poorly tested chemicals, and anything else that has the potential of causing grave harm BEFORE they are put on the market. This is not the reality.
