ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — The U.S. homeland security chief says al-Qaeda militants still pose a threat to democracies.
Michael Chertoff says "al-Qaeda is still very intent on carrying out attacks on anybody they perceive as democratic, free and promoters of values of respect."
He said "all democracies are potentially at risk," during a visit to the Turkish capital on Wednesday.
Turkey, a predominantly Muslim but democratic country, has been vigilant against homegrown Islamic militants since al-Qaeda-linked militants carried out suicide bombings that targeted two synagogues, the British Consulate and a British bank in Istanbul in 2003 and killed 58 people.
