1. Oath Keepers doubles it's paid membership after Chris Matthews spat all over himself trying to throw Stewart Rhodes under the bus

No amount of controversy will keep Oath Keepers from educating people about what it means to support and defend the Constitution.

That was the message Saturday during the kickoff of the group's inaugural national conference, a two-day event that comes at a time when Oath Keepers is experiencing a surge in membership and notoriety.

Started earlier this year by Las Vegas resident Stewart Rhodes, Oath Keepers is a nonprofit organization made up primarily of current and former police and military personnel who renew their oaths to the Constitution.

Rhodes, a former Army paratrooper and Yale University Law School graduate, opened the conference at Texas Station with a warning that Washington politicians cannot be trusted to uphold their oaths to the Constitution.

Navy Cmdr. David Gillie, a board member of Oath Keepers and the group's national Navy liaison, conducted a public oath ceremony Saturday afternoon.

The group has close to 2,000 dues-paying members, twice the number it had last week, said Dave Freeman, a board member and the group's national peace officer liaison.

Oath Keepers has heard from thousands more who have expressed interest in becoming members, Freeman said.

2. heavily armed law enforcement teams will scatter across the Bay Area this weekend -- including foreign troops

Armed officers in full battle gear will be scattered throughout the Bay Area this weekend, rescuing hostages, fighting bank robbers and quelling terrorism at the Oakland Airport, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, the NASA Ames Research Center and 22 other high profile sites.

There will be the sound of gunfire and blasts — all part of Urban Shield, one of the biggest domestic terrorism drills in the country. The $1 million, two-day event begins Saturday and will test the training of 27 crack teams from throughout the state, elsewhere in the country and the world.

For the first time in the three-year history of the Alameda County Sheriff's Department-sponsored exercise, there will be a foreign team of officers taking part and international observers. An eight-member team representing the French National Police's Research, Assistance, Intervention, and Dissuasion unit will compete.

Romulad Muller, police attache with the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., who accompanied the team, described them as the French "Dream Team." Members began training six months ago to learn how to combat the stress and fatigue they will face.

All 27 teams will run through each of the 25 scenarios. About 3,000 people are involved in the $1 million event, the cost of which is covered by Homeland Security grants and corporate sponsorships.
