The Alhurra television channel is an American foreign policy tool, and Joaquin Blaya, one of four members of the US Broadcasting Board of Governors who oversee the channel, makes no bones about it.
"Yes, it is part of our public diplomacy. Alhurra today has a budget of $126m a year. We don't carry any advertising. We are subsidised by the American taxpayer. The American taxpayer is not paying for entertainment for people living in the Middle East. They are paying for the promotion of freedom and democracy, through news and information," he says.
Alhurra, for non-Arab readers unfamiliar with it, is a television channel that broadcasts mainly from America across 22 countries in the Middle East region. According to Blaya, it has a weekly audience of 27 million people, and is watched in, for example, 55 percent of Iraq homes, 55 percent of Syrian homes, 30 percent of Oman homes, and 27 percent of Moroccan homes.
...In May, 2007, Blaya was summoned to testify to a subcommittee of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The hearing was prompted by revelations that, on several occasions, Alhurra had broadcast messages against American interests, including "a 68-minute call to arms against Israelis by a senior figure of Hezbollah; deferential coverage of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's Holocaust denial conference; and a factually flawed piece on a splinter group of Orthodox Jews who oppose the state of Israel."
According to ABC News, Blaya told the hearing that important decisions regarding Alhurra's output were being left in the hands of "reporters and producers who are hastily hired Arabic-speaking journalists with insufficient understanding of Western journalistic practices or the network's pro-Western mission." I know what happened to the Air France Flight 447
According to Air France CEO Pierre-Henry Gourgeon the Air France AirBus flying from Rio to Paris transmitted "a succession of a dozen technical messages" indicated that "several electrical systems had broken down" which caused a "totally unprecedented situation in the plane."
Gourgeon is wrong. The events that resulted in the death of 128 people over the Atlantic were precedented. There have been several similar events.
Reuters has reported that AirBus is claiming that the Airbus A330 has a good safety record, with no fatal accidents on a commercial flight. This is a falsehood that Reuters did not bother to correct.
In Miami in 1999 pilot and co-pilot of an American Airlines Airbus A300 about to land suddenly lost control of the plane to an exogenous agency. The rudder moved several times on its own. "The rudder movements were extreme" said the NTSP.

The end of the current financial system, as we know it, may be imminent. If you would have asked me even two weeks ago if collapse was imminent, I would have said it was highly unlikely, now I am saying it is possible. Bernanke may be able to patch things up short-term, if he is lucky, but in the long term the U.S. financial structure is in serious trouble. There is just too much Treasury debt that needs to be raised. An international panic out of Treasury securities, even a slow controlled panic, means the Fed will be the major buyer. This will ultimately mean record inflation.
And keep this in mind, we have never seen a collapse of a currency like the dollar. Even the hyperinflation during Germany's Wiemar Period can not serve as an example. Since the dollar is the reserve currency of most of the world, a panic out of the dollar means more dollars will return to the U.S. shores than any country has ever experienced.
Other countries have had collapsed currencies, but never in the history of world of finance has so much currency been held outside a country of issue that could come flying back, almost on a moments notice. If the panic out of the dollar starts, even if Bernanke stops printing money (unlikely), all the dollars flying back into the U.S. could cause a huge price inflation all on its own.
N Korea ready to launch missile

Satellite images from the GlobalSecurity website show the new Tongchang-ni launch site in the North's west coast near China and is reportedly ready for use after nearly a decade of construction.
The launch tower and what appears to be construction materials on the launch pad are seen in the images, according to Tim Brown, a senior fellow with GlobalSecurity.
He speculated the debris may be there to make the pad appear as though it is still under construction.
"The launch pad appears to be operational,'' Brown said.

It is immoral to expect a weak party to negotiate with a strong party that’s daily in breach of international law, commits war crimes and acts of piracy and continues to steal land and dispossess the weak party's citizens in order to unlawfully expand its borders.
It is immoral for the sponsors of the negotiations to be partisan and vilify the democratically elected representatives of the weak party, and to refuse to acknowledge the weak party's right to political self-determination and territorial integrity.

In openly opposing the American president's injunction to put an end to the settlements, Benjamin Netanyahu risks political arm wrestling with the White House.
How can Obama make him give in?
No one imagines he will reconsider the military aid the U.S. accords Israel each year. Besides, there is every chance that Congress would oppose it.
So what can he do?
Here are four ideas floating around these days:
1. He could freeze the guaranteed credit that America allocates to Israel. That's how George H.W. Bush convinced Itzhak Shamir to participate in the Madrid conference.
2. He could ask the IRS to take a look at the American NGOs participating in the financing of the settlements and to which contributions are made, just as Washington Post columnist, David Ignatius, recently revealed some that were tax deductible.
3. He could take the initiative of diplomatically isolating Israel from the Security Council by submitting a resolution condemning the settlements (I hardly believe he would go that far).
4. He could incite Europeans not to "build up" their relations with Jerusalem as is expected during a reunion between the EU and Israel next June 15 (a reunion already postponed for this reason, a postponement which, among others, would explain the cancellation of Netanyahu's visit to Paris).

The planned appointment of a Hispanic woman judge to the Supreme Court captured the lead headlines. The fact that 800 unemployed people stood in line to apply for a job as a school janitor also made headlines. And as a rule, Obama gets most of the headlines, due to his dizzying whirl of activity. By comparison, Bibi might as well not exist.
As someone who has accompanied most Israeli premiers on their trips abroad, I was always amazed by the electricity they generated during these visits, whether positive or negative, as well as by the maneuverability that Israeli leaders enjoyed in America. If the president was unsympathetic, they went to Congress; if Congress was unsupportive, they went back to the president. If the State Department imposed a veto, Jewish organizations would pressure the president, who wanted to be reelected, to impose his will on the secretary of state.

Israeli proposal: make Jordan the official Palestinian homeland
Amman, Jordan; and Jerusalem – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and senior members of his cabinet have pushed back hard against a renewed US demand to end settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territories. Interior Minister Eli Yishai said Sunday that it amounted to "expulsion."
But 53 Israeli parliamentarians have moved to explore another kind of expulsion: Under a proposal to be reviewed this week, Jordan would become the official homeland for Palestinians now living in the West Bank.
Among the challenges facing the proposal is this: nobody asked Jordan if it would support such a plan.
Not surprisingly, it doesn't.

An invitation to the local lodge
I run a small business in Canada and acquired a client who was a freemason. He took some time to tell me how amazing it was and that I should consider joining. I paid very little attention to it at the time but we remained in contact. The following year I began to do my research to see if perhaps it was for me. I had heard good things and bad things (horrendous things) about freemasonry. I knew a few freemasons who were all fairly successful financially so I though I would check it out. I had a couple of guys visit my home to talk about it with me. They explained that it was a group of guys getting together and acting out ancient rituals etc. There were a couple questions they had for me:

A Former Israeli education minister has accused the US secretary of state and Israeli Foreign Minster of having a sexual relationship.
Limor Livnat, who is an Israeli Knesset (parliament) member, has told Benjamin Netanyahu that Condoleezza Rice and Tzipi Livni have sexual affairs.
Meanwhile, an American newspaper has quoted Rice as saying that she is a lesbian and has bought her partner an apartment in New York in order to engage in sexual conduct.

US rabbi calls on Israel to kill Palestinian women, children, cattle
Hasidic Jewish Rabbi Manis Friedman, from St. Paul, Minnesota, has issued a statement that Israel should destroy Palestinian holy sites and kill civilians in what he calls “the Jewish way” to fight a “moral war”.
The statement was printed in response to the question “How Should Jews Treat Their Arab Neighbors?” in the May/June edition of the Jewish magazine 'Moment', in a section titled 'Ask the Rabbis'. The magazine printed responses from nine different rabbis, each representing a different school of Jewish thought. The rabbis surveyed included Independent, Humanist, Reform, Modern Orthodox, Renewal, Reconstructionist, Conservative, Sephardic and Chabad.
Rabbi Friedman represented the Chabad section of the article. His full statement was as follows:
“I don’t believe in western morality, i.e. don’t kill civilians or children, don’t destroy holy sites, don’t fight during holiday seasons, don’t bomb cemeteries, don’t shoot until they shoot first because it is immoral. The only way to fight a moral war is the Jewish way: Destroy their holy sites. Kill men, women and children (and cattle).”
“The first Israeli prime minister who declares that he will follow the Old Testament will finally bring peace to the Middle East. First, the Arabs will stop using children as shields. Second, they will stop taking hostages knowing that we will not be intimidated. Third, with their holy sites destroyed, they will stop believing that G-d is on their side. Result: no civilian casualties, no children in the line of fire, no false sense of righteousness, in fact, no war.”“Zero tolerance for stone throwing, for rockets, for kidnapping will mean that the state has achieved sovereignty. Friedman's statement was countered by that of Rabbi Fred Schindler Dodd, from Maryland, who said in his response to the question “How Should Jews Treat Their Arab Neighbors?” by saying, “My least-proud-to-be-Jewish moment was witnessing hundreds of kippah-clad Jerusalem protesters chant, mavet l’Aravim (“death to Arabs”). But acts of reconciliation and coexistence, proud moments, abound, too. May we tip the scales toward coexistence, justice and peace for all who inhabit the Holy Land and this holy Earth.”

The Democratic Chairman of the Agriculture Committee yesterday announced to the press that “The banks run the place,” in reference to the US Congress. He is the second notable elected official to speak out in recent weeks over the gross and institutionally corrupt conflict of interest on Capitol Hill.
“I will tell you what the problem is,” Collin Peterson told the New York Times, “they give three times more money than the next biggest group. It’s huge the amount of money they put into politics.”
Peterson is pushing for legislation to regulate derivatives trading. His proposed bill would limit derivatives trading to public exchanges, rather than private clearinghouses, which are managed by banks.

The federal government mistakenly made public a 266-page report, its pages marked “highly confidential,” that gives detailed information about hundreds of the nation’s civilian nuclear sites and programs, including maps showing the precise locations of stockpiles of fuel for nuclear weapons.
The publication of the document was revealed Monday in an online newsletter devoted to issues of federal secrecy. That set off a debate among nuclear experts about what dangers, if any, the disclosures posed. It also prompted a flurry of investigations in Washington into why the document had been made public.

While we await the return of the predictive linguistics reports on June 21st (or around in there) I can't tell you how many readers have written asking if the missing plane/disappearance of the Air France flight over the Atlantic with 228 people on board meets or met the prediction in the ALTA (Asymmetric Language Trend Analysis) reports out of www.halfpasthuman.com around the concept of missing/vanishing celebrities which was expected over the course of summer.
The answer is complicated, so bear with me:
First point to make is that the whole "disappearances" meme (*a thought virus or propagating idea in the MSM) was explained in ALTA 1309 this way:
"The data sets continue to grow for [disappearances], with an increasing frequency of [reporting] of such over Summer from mid May onward. A number of the [disappearances], are also indicated to be [occurring] in Summer."
Apparently, the 'disappears' meme is going to be persistent for the next few months, since in ALTA 1109 (February 7 ALTA Report) it was described this way:
"In other words, the events of Spring/Summer of 2009 relative to the [disappearances] meme will repeat in a manifestation of a larger, related meme in late Fall and early Winter of 2009."

Organizing demonstrations in front of Iranian consulates worldwide, staging mock stonings and hangings in public, and launching a massive media campaign against Iran - these are just some of the steps Israeli diplomats have been told to take in the coming weeks. The goal, according to a senior Foreign Ministry official, is “to show the world that Iran is not a Western democracy” in the run-up to the country’s presidential election on June 12.
About a week ago, the head of the ministry’s Task Force on Isolating Iran sent a classified telegram to all Israeli embassies and consulates, titled “Activities in the Run-up to Iran’s Presidential Election.” It detailed things Israeli representatives should do before, during and after the election.
The telegram noted that hundreds of journalists from around the world will go to Iran to cover the election. Therefore, Israeli representatives must try to give background briefings to various media outlets before the journalists depart, and to the host country’s foreign ministry officials.
In addition, diplomats should try to promote press coverage of stories that reveal the Iranian regime’s true face, especially its violations of human rights and suppression of individual liberty.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama reversed his decision to release detainee abuse photos from Iraq and Afghanistan after Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki warned that Iraq would erupt into violence and that Iraqis would demand that U.S. troops withdraw from Iraq a year earlier than planned, two U.S. military officers, a senior defense official and a State Department official have told McClatchy.
In the days leading up to a May 28 deadline to release the photos in response to an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit, U.S. officials, led by Christopher Hill, the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, told Maliki that the administration was preparing to release photos of suspected detainee abuse taken from 2003 to 2006.
When U.S. officials told Maliki, "he went pale in the face," said a U.S. military official, who along with others requested anonymity because of the matter's sensitivity.
The official said Maliki warned that releasing the photos would lead to more violence that could delay the scheduled U.S. withdrawal from cities by June 30 and that Iraqis wouldn't make a distinction between old and new photos. The public outrage and increase in violence could lead Iraqis to demand a referendum on the security agreement and refuse to permit U.S. forces to stay until the end of 2011.
Maliki said, "Baghdad will burn" if the photos are released, said a second U.S. military official.

British scientists have appealed to the World Health Organisation to publicly condemn homeopathy as a treatment for serious diseases, such as HIV, TB and malaria.

Israel 'will not bow' to US settlement freeze call
Israel will not agree to US demands to freeze all settlement activity in the occupied West Bank, a minister close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
"I want to say in a crystal clear manner that the current Israeli government will not accept in any fashion that legal settlement activity in Judea and Samaria be frozen," said Transport Minister Yisrael Katz, using the Israeli term for the West Bank.

The New York State Office of Homeland Security will work with these synagogues to craft and submit a security plan to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Paterson also sent a letter to Congress, requesting an increase in homeland security funding for not-for-profits, including synagogues.

All New Yorkers of every faith should feel safe in their religious sanctuaries,” said Paterson. “In New York, we must maintain a special vigilance. Four men from Newburgh, NY were arrested for hatching the plot to buy explosives and blow up the two synagogues. They also bought a stinger rocket that they wanted to use to shoot down C-5A cargo jets at Stewart Airport at Newburgh. The FBI infiltrated the terrorist gang and sold them fake bombs and missiles. The men were arrested last week.

Israeli political officials expressed disappointment after Tuesday's round of meetings in London with George Mitchell, U.S. President Barack Obama's envoy to the Middle East.
"We're disappointed," said one senior official. "All of the understandings reached during the [George W.] Bush administration are worth nothing." Another official said the U.S. administration is refusing every Israeli attempt to reach new agreements on settlement construction. "The United States is taking a line of granting concessions to the Palestinians that is not fair toward Israel," he said.

Boston Mayor Menino says no to police patrols with M-16s
Boston Mayor Tom Menino has announced he will not approve a police department plan to arm neighborhood officers with semiautomatic rifles.
Menino said Friday he didn’t want M-16s, given to the city free of charge from the US military, in the hands of regular patrol officers.
But Menino said he’d be open to giving the rifles to "specialized units."
The police recently obtained 200 M-16s from the US military and had made plans to train dozens of officers and arm them with the rifles.
However, some community leaders decried the lack of public notice and questioned the reasoning behind arming district officers with M-16s when the city’s SWAT team already has such weapons.

France considers MANDATORY flu vaccinations
The French government will spend nearly a billion euros on a mandatory flu vaccination this autumn, a French website reported on May 30. “France is preparing a battle plan without precedent for this autumn, including an obligatory vaccination campaign for all French of more than 3 months of age,” writes Marie-Christine Tabet for Le Journal du Dimanche. “According to our information, the State will place an order for 100 million units of influenza vaccine from three laboratories (GlaxoSmithKline, Sanofi and Novartis).”

Iowa State University researchers are putting flu vaccines into the genetic makeup of corn, which may someday allow pigs and humans to get a flu vaccination simply by eating corn or corn products.
“We’re trying to figure out which genes from the swine influenza virus to incorporate into corn so those genes, when expressed, would produce protein,” said Hank Harris, professor in animal science and one of the researchers on the project. “When the pig consumes that corn, it would serve as a vaccine.”

ELECTROMAGNETIC pulse weapons capable of frying the electronics in civil airliners can be built using information and components available on the net, warn counterterrorism analysts.
All it would take to bring a plane down would be a single but highly energetic microwave radio pulse blasted from a device inside a plane, or on the ground and trained at an aircraft coming in to land.
Yael Shahar, director of the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism in Herzliya, Israel, and her colleagues have analysed electromagnetic weapons in development or used by military forces worldwide, and have discovered that there is low-cost equipment available online that can act in similar ways. "These will become more of a threat as the electromagnetic weapons technology matures," she says.
For instance, the US and Russian military have developed electromagnetic pulse (EMP) warheads that create a radio-frequency shockwave. The radio pulse creates an electric field of many hundreds of thousands of volts per metre, which induces currents that burn out nearby electrical systems, such as microchips and car electronics.
Speculation persists that such "e-bombs" have been used in the Persian Gulf, and in Kosovo and Afghanistan - but this remains unconfirmed. But much of what the military is doing can be duplicated by others, Shahar says. "Once it is known that aircraft are vulnerable to particular types of disruption, it isn't too much of a leap to build a device that can produce that sort of disruption. And much of this could be built from off-the-shelf components or dual-use technologies."
For example, government labs use high-energy EMP devices to test what would happen to critical electronic systems if a nuclear weapon detonated, generating a vast electromagnetic pulse, says Robert Iannini, founder of Information Unlimited in Amherst, New Hampshire, which sells EMP test systems.
EMPs can be created in a number of ways. A machine called a Marx generator can quickly dump an extremely high charge stored in a bank of capacitors into an antenna, which then releases a highly energetic radio pulse. Devices like this are often used to test power lines for their resistance to lightning strikes. An alternative, known as a flux compression device, uses a small explosive to push an armature through a current-carrying coil that is generating a magnetic field. This compresses the magnetic field, again producing a devastating EMP.
Iannini says his company only sells such devices to legitimate buyers. "The only people that buy these things are qualified researchers at labs like Sandia. They never find their way into the labs of pseudo or amateur scientists," he says. "If we get any unknown overseas purchaser we immediately alert the office of export enforcement at the US Department of Commerce."
But Shahar told delegates at the annual Directed Energy Weapons conference in London last month that security at some labs can be lax, while basic EMP generators can be built from descriptions available online, using components found in devices such as digital cameras. "These are technologically unchallenging to build and most of the information necessary is available," she says.
The increasing use of carbon-fibre reinforced composite in aircraft fuselages is also making them more vulnerable, she says, because composites provide poor shielding against electromagnetic radiation compared with metal. "What is needed is extensive shielding of electronic components and the vast amount of cables running down the length of the aircraft," she says.
Jerome Bruel, an electrical systems expert at the European Aviation Safety Agency in Cologne, Germany, agrees that newer all-composite planes like the Airbus A350 will probably need some means of protecting their cabling from all radio energy sources, including TV transmitters. "They may need a metal mesh surrounding them to absorb interference," he says.
Douglas Beason, a director at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, says it may be straightforward to build a do-it-yourself EMP weapon, but more difficult to make one that can be stowed in an aircraft. "A lot of work would need to go into dramatically decreasing the weight, shrinking the power supply and antenna," he says.
Nevertheless, governments are taking the threat seriously. A spokesperson at the UK Department of Transport said the government is well aware of this security issue and has close links with agencies "able to provide a balanced picture in regards to EMP weapons, and their potential to compromise civilian aircraft".

Within minutes from take-off, flight security officials aboard a late Saturday Kish Air flight en route to Tehran from the southern city of Ahvaz, discovered that a handmade bomb had been planted in the plane's toilet, Fars news agency reported on Sunday.
After an emergency return to Ahvaz airport, all 131 passengers were safely evacuated.
Bomb disposal squad and security personnel arrived just in time to defuse the explosive device before it caused serious casualties.
This missing Air France case is highly suspicious, kind of reminds me of the JFK Jr. case and Paul Wellstone plane, other planes that had mysterious catastrophic failures. I wonder who was on board. - Ed.

Officials said they had "no hope" for Air France Flight 447 which dropped off the radar three hours and less than 200 miles into a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.
As the Brazilian air force mounted a search and rescue operation for the Airbus 330-200k in the waters around the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, families of passengers gathered at a crisis centre in Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport awaiting news.
The Foreign Office said it was "urgently" seeking news on whether there were any Britons on board.
Air France said that the aircraft had sent a message reporting an electrical "short circuit" after strong turbulence.
The company said the plane had probably been struck by lightning.
An Airbus source described the failure as "catastrophic" suggesting a sudden and unexplained systems failure.

After more than 20 years of presiding over more than $3 trillion worth of military fraud, Pentagon Comptroller Dov Zakheim has left the building. He will join Booz Allen Hamilton through the traditional revolving door for government-corporate insiders.
A former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense from 1985-1987 and Pentagon Comptroller since 2001, Zakheim was responsible for mismanaging more than $400 billion annually, as Pentagon discredited audits have persisted year after year.
The Department of Defense has never received a clean financial audit.
As recently as the December 18, 2003 audit by GAO (General Accounting Office), the Pentagon's 'War on Iraq Scam' and other Information Technology (IT) Fraud yielded $1.6 billion in "losses," money "missing" and otherwise unaccounted for.
In an article from "Government Executive" magazine ("Bye Bye Budgeteer," May 2004) Zakheim admitted, "...we are in the business of fighting wars. We are not in the business of balancing books."

Earlier Friday North Korea threatened to take fresh steps to defend itself if world powers impose sanctions for the test.
On Wednesday, Pyongyang renounced the armistice that ended the Korean War in 1953 and warned it could launch strikes on the South if its ships were inspected by international forces looking for nuclear material.

Army would have to 'shift gears' for N. Korea battle
WASHIGTON – It would take the Army time to "shift gears" if it needed to fight against North Korea, Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey said Thursday.
Right now, the Army is focused on the counterinsurgency efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, but North Korea’s recent saber rattling has raised the prospect that the Army might be called upon to fight a conventional war.
"I have said publicly for some time that if we had to shift gears, it would probably take us about 90 days or so to shift our gears and to train the folks up that were preparing to go to Iraq and Afghanistan to go someplace else," Casey said after a speech at a [UNNAMED] Washington think tank.

Abu Ghraib abuse photos 'show rape'
The "purpose" served by releasing the photos is a MORAL purpose. People need to be horrified at the things done in our names, and if it takes photos, so be it. As for our foreign policy, it is Abu Ghraib writ large across the world. Once again, our troops are used to "protect" such abominable policies. Therefore it seems clear that the release of the photos would accomplish exactly the right thing, if *as feared in Taguba's statement* such release would pull the plug on our foreign policy exploits and return our troops back home where they can help stop the destruction of America currently underway. - Ed.
At least one picture shows an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee.
Further photographs are said to depict sexual assaults on prisoners with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube.
Another apparently shows a female prisoner having her clothing forcibly removed to expose her breasts.
Detail of the content emerged from Major General Antonio Taguba, the former army officer who conducted an inquiry into the Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq.
Allegations of rape and abuse were included in his 2004 report but the fact there were photographs was never revealed. He has now confirmed their existence in an interview with the Daily Telegraph.
The graphic nature of some of the images may explain the US President’s attempts to block the release of an estimated 2,000 photographs from prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan despite an earlier promise to allow them to be published.
Maj Gen Taguba, who retired in January 2007, said he supported the President’s decision, adding: “These pictures show torture, abuse, rape and every indecency.
“I am not sure what purpose their release would serve other than a legal one and the consequence would be to imperil our troops, the only protectors of our foreign policy, when we most need them, and British troops who are trying to build security in Afghanistan."

Jerusalem - Israel will stage its largest-ever national exercise next week to test security and emergency responses to potential missile attacks, bombings and natural disasters, an official said on Wednesday.

The five-day exercise begins on Sunday and will simulate simultaneous rocket strikes from the Gaza Strip and Lebanon and missile attacks from arch-foes Syria and Iran, Defence Ministry spokesman Shlomo Dror told AFP.
"We will be exercising the doomsday scenario of simultaneous strikes against Israel on all fronts and by different means," Dror said, stressing that "such a scenario is highly unlikely."
This will include conventional, chemical and biological strikes against large population centres. It will also simulate a wave of Palestinian suicide bombings.
A high point of the drill will be on Tuesday when air-raid sirens sound across the country and citizens must scramble to shelters, in some areas within seconds and others within no more than three minutes.
Exercise Turning Point 3 will also simulate rescue and medical services' conduct during earthquakes and epidemics.
And there will be simulated cabinet meetings in which ministers will weigh their response to such attacks and scenarios.
This will be the third such exercise since Israel's 2006 war in Lebanon that saw nearly one million citizens in the north of the country coming under heavy rocket fire for more than a month.
"The Second Lebanon War revealed that the homefront was not well prepared for war and citizens found it hard to adapt to the special situation," Dror said.
The army plans to distribute gas masks to all of Israel's 7.2 million citizens in November, he added.
The drill comes just two weeks after the air force wrapped up a massive four-day exercise that tested its ability to defend against missile and jet strikes from Syria and Iran.
It was the first time the army has simulated strikes from the Islamic republic, located more than 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) away, he said.
