LONDON (AP) — Health experts say extraordinary measures against swine flu — most notably quarantines imposed by China, where entire planeloads of passengers were isolated if one traveler had symptoms — have failed to contain the disease.
Despite initially declaring success, Beijing now acknowledges its swine flu outbreak is much larger than official numbers show.
China's official count of some 63,000 reported illnesses with 53 deaths dwarfs estimates of millions of cases with nearly 4,000 deaths in the United States, a nation with about a third of China's population.
Dr. Michael O'Leary, WHO's top representative in China, says there has been a dramatic spike in Chinese swine flu cases recently and those reported by the government are only "minimum numbers."
"We have new cases occurring all the time," he told The Associated Press last week. "There's always more deaths than we could possibly know about."
...Other nations that have carried out draconian swine flu policies indicate they have little effect in containing the disease.
...When WHO declared swine flu to be a pandemic in June, it described the virus as "unstoppable." It advised countries not to close their borders or impose mass quarantines, warning such measures would be useless since people often spread flu viruses before developing any symptoms.

2. millions hit by plague worse than swine flu
A DEADLY plague could sweep across Europe, doctors fear, after an outbreak of a virus in Ukraine plunged the country and its neighbours into a state of panic.
A cocktail of three flu viruses are reported to have mutated into a single pneumonic plague, which it is believed may be far more dangerous than swine flu. The death toll has reached 189 and more than 1 million people have been infected, most of them in the nine regions of Western Ukraine.
President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko has called in the World Health Organisation and a team of nine specialists are carrying out tests in Kiev and Lviv to identify the virus. Samples have been sent to London for analysis.
President Yushchenko said: “People are dying. The epidemic is killing doctors. This is absolutely inconceivable in the 21st Century.”
In a TV interview, the President added: “Unlike similar epidemics in other countries, three causes of serious viral infections came together simultaneously in Ukraine – two seasonal flus and the Californian flu
“Virologists conclude that this combination of infections may produce an even more aggressive new virus as a result of mutation.”

3. exposing WHO influenza advisors: they're paid by BIG PHARMA
Several of the WHO's influenza advisers are paid by the pharmaceutical industry. Conflicts of interest have encouraged the industry to influence the decision that the H1N1 swine flu is a pandemic - and that the vaccine is necessary to defeat the disease.
On June 11, 2009, WHO Director General Margaret Chan stated that the swine influenza was a pandemic. It meant a huge economic benefit for the pharmaceutical industry. Many member countries - including Denmark - have contracts with major pharmaceutical companies and are therefore obligated to purchase vaccines in the event of a pandemic.
Investment bank JP Morgan estimates that the pharmaceutical industry may well receive vaccine orders up to 10 billion this year. Much of the turnover is due to the WHO's decision.
Many of the apparently impartial researchers the WHO uses are paid by the companies that produce vaccines.
...Dr. Frederick Hayden is an outside expert in WHO's SAGE (strategize Advisory Group of Experts), which advises WHO on vaccines. He appears in the official papers as flu-research coordinator from the anonymous organization "The Welcome Trust in London."
But in a Google search shows that Dr. Hayden has many other employers. He is in particular a 'paid adviser' for pharmaceutical companies Roche, RW Johnson, SmithKline Beecham and Glaxo Wellcome.

GENEVA, Nov 19 (Reuters) - A small number of people have died after being inoculated against H1N1 pandemic flu, but investigations have shown that the deaths are not due to the vaccines, a senior official at the World Health Organisation said on Nov. 19.
"No new safety issue has been identified from reports issued to date [major weasel wording - ed.]... Reporting so far reconfirms that the pandemic flu vaccine is as safe as the seasonal flu vaccine," WHO vaccine expert Marie-Paule Kieny told a teleconference.
Governments have so far reported that 65 million vaccines have been administered against H1N1, known as swine flu, but the true figure is probably higher, she said.
